the worst abomination - The Green Zone

all the talk about the US leaving Iraq does not mention the Green Zone, smack dab in the middle of Baghdad.

you know, that place that has electricity 24/7. clean water 24/7 US fast food, movie theaters, swimming pools, etc., just call it a little american clone, and what will be the LARGEST embassy in the world, in the process of being built now along with apartment bldgs. to house the thousands of american workers.

it's also the place where the so called elected Iraqi govt. hides to do their so called work.

so to say the US will leave Iraq is a lie as long as the Green Zone remains.

everyone behind the green walls think they are safe. however they breathe the same depleted uranium air as the rest of the country.

in time (if not already) the Green Zone will become a bull's eye. and rightly so.

2. Once again I throw down my challenge
Even though the Green zone is the safest place now to live there, I still say I will vote for the first Democrat who says he will appoint little lord pissy pants to be the next ambassador to Iraq.

He thinks this was such a good idea, let him live there for a little while. My bet is he wont take the job.

5. The Green Zone was already a bull's eye when I was there . . .

Right after the war: celebratory fire (expended shells raining down from outside when anyone let off a burst from his AK47, apparently in simple high spirits), the occasional mortar round (more common now, I've heard), and the always-delightful dash to the airport along the charmingly named "Highway of Death."

More telling than the embassy as a sign that Bush plans never to leave are the permanent bases being built (or maybe they're complete -- it's been more than 2 years since I was there) near the airport in Baghdad and elsewhere in the country. Notable was the fact that they were building dependent housing -- like anyone would be crazy enough to bring their family to the place -- as part of the initial build-out.

But let's be real. Those bases will never be used as they were intended. Just a few hundred million more of our money down the drain due to this administration's love affair with fantasy.

10. That's the way I understand it
That it comes under attack daily, and with mortars more now. I think the greenzone will shrink in on itself, it may be safer in the center, but, that's now. In a few weeks, months, it may not be such a safe place to be. People still have to come and go from there, that may be pretty scarey in the future.
