Poll question: Choose only one: Which of these politicians is most likely to be a racist?
Not just a casual racist, but a white supremacist, someone with a real tendency to hate other races?

I submit that people don't usually acquire such reputations for no reason at all.

1. Point of Order
George Allen is a known racist, at least to anybody who has lived in NoVA or DC within the past 10 years. Should he really be in there?

That's like asking who might be a racist: Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, or David Duke.

4. Known racists need to be called out.
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 11:24 AM by BurtWorm
And they certainly shouldn't be allowed to be sent to Congress or the Senate.

PS: In fact, that's the point of this thread. If we know George Allen is a racist, what the fuck is he doing in the Senate?

7. Well...I never voted for him in the 2 years I lived in Arlington
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 12:02 PM by Chan790
but my point was that in his case, there is no thought involved. The question was "who do you suspect of being a racist?". People who don't think George Allen is a racist are the same people who think Surgeon General warnings on cigarettes are a conspiracy by liberals in the northeast to destroy the VA and NC state economies (ie. wingnuts). These are the same fuckwads who elected him and they'll probably fight like hell to re-elect him. Some fair portion of them probably even vote for him on the basis of being a racist. George Allen is a known racist.

His presence is dragging down vote totals for people who are strongly suspected of being racists and equally deserving of being called out, as he's just too far of an outlier. I assumed that was the same reason Trent Lott or Tom Tancredo weren't included...there just isn't much question there.

Edit: I take that back, the question was "Which of these politicians is most likely to be a racist?" so it's definately Allen.

10. Thank you. See, I was looking for something precise.
I think Allen's racist underdrawers got flashed to the wider public this week. If there's any justice left in this democracy, Allen's career ought to be ground into the dust.

9. But if people voted for that as their representation
isn't that how it's supposed to work? Unless they didn't know they were voting for a racist, but then the whole politically correct speech topic can be brought up.

25. Did the people of Allen's district know he was a racist?
Did he run as a racist? No! He's been trying to hide it. It's lucky for the people of Virginia he couldn't hold it in any longer.

If he wasn't able to hide behind focus-grouped language, people would know who and what they were voting for.

13. Being a Racist is not a crime...
Last time I checked. If Virginians want to throw this jackass on his but next election, that is their business.

14. No, it's not a crime.
But racists have no business holding public office because they don't represent the minorities they're supposed to represent.

19. Yes, unfortunately if the people are majority racists...
then you get racists in office. Which is why there's a constitution and a system of courts around to protect minorities from racist majorities.

22. Well if their job is cooking french fries that's not a big deal.
However, if their job is to represent the public, such as a politician, or to protect and serve the public, such as a police officer, than they've got no business having that job if they're a racist.

I know that you know what I'm saying. You know that I know what you're saying. We're on the same wave length. In an enlightened world, they technically have no business holding public office. In a strict democratic sense, if voted in, they're in.

Down time at work in front of a computer. It's FAAAAANtastic.

I also have got the gut impression from his language at times that he considers Iraqis and others to be some inferior.

And don't give me that "Bush has Condi" crap.

They only accept minorities that sell out and embrace policies that help rich, white Americans.

That means, guess what, they are racist.

I have known Sen. McCain for several years and if he is a racist he hides it very well. While I have differences with him politically, if he is a racist, Im the queen of may.

38. I'm sure they are not, I've just never met a not racist Republican
Even the most liberal seemingly kind-hearted Republicans are racist when it comes right down to it. Most Democrats are racist. Most of the blacks & other monorities I grew up with are racist. Many of my liberal family are racist. Some highly visible minorities think it is part of their right to be racist. Racism is not unusual, but I've yet to meet a Republican that wasn't - racism/bigotry is part and parcel of what it means to be a Republican as far as I can tell - and I know hundreds of Republicans due to my job & living arrangements. All is good until you get into a private setting where they can "let go" as it were. There may be some non-racist Republicans, I just haven't met them.
