Jimmy Carter is the greatest ex-president of all time.
I mean, who else even comes close?

Whenever you're in need of a reason to be proud of being a Democrat, look no further than Jimmy Carter. What an inspiration he is.

1. I agree wholeheartedly.
Wouldn't it be great now if the energy conservation programs he put into place weren't dismantled by Reagan.
He is an honorable and humble man. A *real* Christian.

Clinton is looking pretty good as an ex-pres, too. (Can you say "Mr. Secretary-General?" -- it'll never happen, but one can dream.)

13. I don't think it can...
I didn't think the SecGen could be from one of the five permanent members of the Security Council...maybe that is just rumor though.

5. Carter is a genuinely good person
One of the things I think make him great is that he has the funds to sit around or spend his retirement years on vacation, but he chooses to volunteer and really serve. Habitat is a great organization. And he hasn't been afraid to get his hands dirty.

7. and don't forget what they said when he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002
"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 to Jimmy Carter, for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

6. No contest;
It's so sad how they slimed Jimmy and Rosalyn and made all manner of fun because he was trying to get us off our oil addiction. I think it's just phenomenal how the repugs slime machine works so well and we just can't seem to get a step ahead of their game. It also saddens me to hear so may "average" Americans call in to C-Span and spit their hate and venom. In my 62 years, I've never seen this country in such a mess. I was totally against going in to Vietnam like we did, but at least when we left, it was pretty much over for our part. But, this HUGE hornet's nest that these neo-cons have stirred up and then stand back with their smug analysis of "how could this have happened?" crap! I'm seriously worried about our country and what's to come of us people who are not right-wingnuts.

getting their hands dirty trying to ensure free, fair elections. (PS - Mr. Carter, please oversee our elections in November! Pretty Please!!)

34. Or the work his offices do for urban redevelopment & MidEast peace
He's busy as a public servant still, altho he's being paid a LOT better now. My understanding is that he NEVER goes to any Senate spouses functions, however. I wonder if Bob Dole feels snubbed.

Carter measures up.

In addition, he was a visionary President.

And he has been an admirable citizen.

14. My nominees would be
William Howard Taft who served on the Supreme Court after leaving the White House, and John Quincy Adams who went back to the House of Representatives and had a very distinguished career after losing his reelection bid.

If memory's right. I think John Tyler ended up a Confederate congressman, so maybe he'd be on the worst list.

33. Taft--blecch. His term on Scotus featured the worst anti-labor decisions
Taft on the federal bench was a tool of the monopolists and a curse on ordinary consumers. He wasn't a bad president, but as a judge he sucked raw eggs

31. Agreed. Carter is awesome, but JQAdams set the mold for activist ex-Prez's
Also of note are Herbert Hoover, who sadly did far more for his country as ex-P than he did in the White House, Teddy Roosevelt (sltho more for personal valor that public service), and Millard Filmore, who became an active anti-slavery man once out of office.

At our heart is LIBERTY - personal freedom - the right to say what we want, worship how we want, work where we want - to be who we want to be without government interference.

Next comes DEMOCRACY - the idea that all are created equal, and, to the extent that we need a government, everyone should take responsibility for it.

Our forefathers brought forth the CONSTITUTION - the foundation of our government. It guarantees individual rights that can never be taken away. It restricts the amount of power the government can have. And it separates powers among the 3 branches of government so each can watch the other.

We value the RULE OF LAW - the structure that protects our freedoms, defines our property rights, enforces our contracts, and punishes our criminals.

32. Who comes close besides JQ Adams: Hoover, T.Roosevelt, & Filmore.
Each continued to play active roles in public life and used their noteriety to champion great causes Hoover for government reform and fighting world hunger; Teddy for conservation, physical fitness and American idealism; Filmore for unionism and the anti-slavery movement. Carter shines bright because he's compared to Republican ex-P's like Ford, Reagan & Bush who spent their retirement years making millions on speaking tours to corporate boardrooms around the country and over to Japan & Britain.

The media just got onto that hook that he was not. But he dealt with reality. Ronnie Raygun promised us an escape from reality that we took him up on and we are really paying for that now.
