School nixes abstinence ed upon realizing 65 students are pregnant

I guess that would be a hint that your sex ed program is less than successful.

In Canton, Ohio, a school board decided to expand sex education to allow for discussion on contraception after realizing that 13 percent of one high school's female students were pregnant. Yeah.

There were 490 female students at Timken High School in 2005, and 65 were pregnant, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported.

The new Canton school board program promotes abstinence but also will teach students who decide to have sex how to do so responsibly, bringing the city school district's health curriculum in line with national standards.

I guess better late than never?

22. Face it, teen agers are into sex these days
Sixty years ago, when I was a teenager, it simply was not cool to indulge in sex. Times have changed dramatically, sex before marriage is acceptable and peer pressure still has the upper hand. So many teenagers believe they are not in the mainstream and are uncool if they don't experience the sex act.
It is very important that kids are educated in the mechanics of sex and use of preventative measures to avoid pregnacy if they want to be 'in' with it. Also the urge to have offspring can be and is a natural instinct in young people. Survival of the species, you know. The realities of caring for kids as well as life itself is not of particular interest to teenagers, especially in this society where the complexity of living is not yet a reality. They should be taught everything there is to know about sexuality.

(head plus desktop)

I'm so proud to be in Canton right now. And so glad I have no kids and am not likely to come down with any.

Can we get a motion to have the school board review cause and effect so that maybe they can, yanno, avoid this kind of stupidity?

7. I'm not sure about Canton, but Cleveland is a pretty blue area!
Was the school board all Pubs there? I'm glad they FINALLY saw the light of reality and are making a change to their rules. It would be GREAT if the rest of the school boards of the Country heard about these results and changed theier rules BEFORE they have such a BIG PROBLEM!

mandatory abortions for all. I was forced to take out my eyebrow and nose ring every day. Now I think they should just take out the babies.

Mandatory abortions?
How about each girl is just given her own choice of what she wants to do.
I can hardly see the correlation between babies and jewelry.

24. Amazing so many parents are timid about
discussing 'the facts of life' with their kids. Somebody has to do it. Schools seem the logical place to teach if those parents are too chicken to discuss the most popular subject in this TV/Hollywood obsessed country of ours.
