Another Ramsey thread. Ex wife gives alibi
"BANGKOK, Thailand - A former American school teacher said publicly Thursday that he was with JonBenet Ramsey when she died in what he called "an accident," a stunning admission after a decade without answers in the 6-year-old girl's murder. But the suspect's ex-wife said she was with him in Alabama at the time of JonBenet's 1996 death."

<snip>

"Karr's ex-wife, Lara Karr, told KGO-TV in California that she was with her former husband in Alabama at the time of JonBenet's killing and she does not believe her former husband was involved in the homicide.

She said her ex-husband spent a lot of time studying the cases of Ramsey and Polly Klaas, who was abducted from her Petaluma, Calif., home and slain in 1993."

I know many people here are already tired of this story, but I find this to be interesting. The whole thing including a lot of the comments made around here lately. Just as many are accusing others of jumping to conclusions about the Ramsey's, they are jumping to conclusions about this Karr guy before they know the real story.

1. This story is very bizarre.
I'll admit I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, but I'd lay odds that Patsey Ramsey gets implicated by the time this is over. Note: It's not that I think she had anything to do with this, but I think that's where this story is leading.

5. Yeah, I agree
Something is strange here. Why would his ex wife say she was with him across the country? Maybe she wants to be noticed too, but that seems doubtful.

2. Well, he's "confessed" -- but I'm told . . .
That the cops get many more false confessions than real ones. I'm leaning towards this guy being a wacko, apparently a "sex tourist" of the sort one doesn't want to describe on a family Web site, but not the murderer of Jon-Benet Ramsay.

3. The only problem with that theory
is that apparently the suspect knew details of the case that hadn't been released to the public.

6. But who was his contact
A journalism professor who made a documentary about the case, and this wouldn't be the first time that a group of "Keystone" cops, leaked information.

What details of the case did this professor know that assisted him in the making of the documentary?

And it was reported that Karr had been talking to this professor for the last two months!

7. It's also possible
That Karr, who was facing charges in Bangkok and a potential prison sentence in a Thai prison told the police that he was involved in the case in order to escape the justice in Thailand, with full knowledge that he would be sent back to the US, and out of the reach of Bangkok authorities.

The high number of false confessions is why such an admission almost never closes a case on its own. The police will continue the investigation to see if the physical evidence they have matches him. They will no doubt also look for evidence that he was in the Colorado Springs area on 12/16/96. I wonder if the ex has proof (like dated photographs) that back up her claim? Ten years is a long time in most people's memories, and she may be confusing one family Christmas with another.

13. That's my theory, too.
I think the guy took Door #2, instead of rotting in a Thai prison
for years.

I fear that someone will "Jack Ruby" this guy before the truth is told.

19. She was killed on Christmas
or the day after so Karr's ex wife may have photos of Christmas day 1996 with him and their kids.

23. They are saying he was being kicked out of Thailand
though earlier I heard he was facing charges there. Then they corrected that to say Thailand considered him undesirable and could not stay in the country.

That might be why he was arrested before the investigation was complete?

It's also possible that Karr, who was facing...a potential...sentence in a Thai prison, told the police that he was involved in the case in order to escape the justice in Thailand, with full knowledge that he would be sent back to the US...

Yep--this could simply be a scam. Child predators are smart that way--smart enough to leave the country, and smart enough to know when one country's justice system is preferable to another's!

4. Some people like to confess, like the notoriety
They figure they'll be exposed and let go eventually. I have no idea if this is the case here, and I really don't care. Whoever killed that kid should be locked away for life, but it's not something that I think about much. There are lots of creeps out there. Just because this got a lot of press, and is a rare "stranger" killing, evidently, doesn't make it all that significant.

They have DNA evidence. We'll know soon, and this whole thing will die down.

14. He needs to go to jail regardless....
http://www.denverpost.com/ci_4192717?source=rss

John Karr was being held while awaiting trial for five counts of child pornography, said Sgt. Rob Giordano, spokesman for the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department. When he finally was released on bond, he disappeared and was convicted in absentia.

15. What evidence do you think the cops will go after?
DNA samples? I thought there was no physical evidence.
How about tax returns? What did he do, at least what did he report and be able to use as a front.
Credit card statements.
Phone records.
It would seem that if he had been in contact with a journalist for 4 years, and that he was an admitted 'fan' with much personal writing and research on JR, perhaps what is purported to have been 'withheld' from the public might have not been exactly and absolutely 'withheld.' The Boulder cops and DA have some animosity and nororiety on this crime.

21. DNA was recovered from her fingernails and underwear
They know the DNA is male but it doesn't match anyone in the Fed database nor anyone else they tested in relation to this case. This guy hasn't been tested yet.

25. John M. Karr listed as living in Petaluma?????
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 12:07 PM by gauguin57
On Zabasearch.com, there's a listing for a John M. Karr, born 1964 (age would be right), living in PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA!!!! CREEPY, if what the ex says is right -- that he was obsessed with Ramsey/Klaas cases.

http://www.zabasearch.com/query1_zaba.php?sname=john%20m.%20karr&state=ALL&ref=$ref&se=$se&doby=&city=&name_style=1

On edit: Whoops ... well, just read the Yahoo! story more carefully, and it does say he lived in Petaluma. I find that just creepy!

27. Unless there is a DNA match with this guy
I'm not buying his confession for a minute - why in the world would his EX wife lie about this - no reason which makes her pretty credible in my eyes - if she wanted publicity herself she could agree to his not being with her then and still get publicity - he is a whack job -
