Attorney General: Terrorists are in our neighborhoods

RAW STORY
Published: Wednesday August 16, 2006

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, in Pittsburgh to address the World Affairs Council, recalled memories of Sep. 11 while referring ominously to a stateless enemy hidden in American towns.

"The most dramatic change," said Gonzales, "is the nature of the enemy our country today faces -- a stateless enemy sometimes hidden and nurtured here in our neighborhoods, taking advantage of the very laws they mock with their killing and destruction, as a shield from detection and prosecution."

Gonzales, further emphasizing the perceived domestic danger, stated, "The threat of homegrown terrorist cells may be as dangerous as groups like al Qaeda, if not more so.

"It is therefore essential that we continue to develop the tools we need to investigate their actions and intentions with the help of our partners, and prosecute those who travel down the road of radicalization."

2. More afraid of Terrorists or unchecked government
The question that comes to my mind is "are we more afraid of terrorists or unchecked government powers". Even if members of the current administration are all angels - sometime an administration will not be and we have lost our democracy and personal liberties.

Who would have thought that in our country, that US Citizens could be arrested in secret and held indefinitely without access to legal representation.

3. Ya know, most of the murderers in this country are sleeping in your BED!
or in your house at least. I've got it! Let's put up surveillance cameras in our BEDROOMS..we will kill two birds with one stone..the religious reight will be able to know if you do it 'missionary style'..and any potential murder/mass murder plot can be thwarted. Am I brilliant or WHAT?

8. "Terrorists in the neighborhood" what a loaded phrase. I was
living in a small town when everyone was talking about the rise in crime. One of the women in my building was terrified and insisted we keep ground floor windows closed even in the summer because the killers could come in that way. She went to a police safety course and they used the phrase to say that crime had gone up 50%. We they were technically correct. We had recently had a murder which was only the second murder ever committed in out community. BUT it was not a reason for such fear.

While there may be some areas that should be careful that there are no terrorist lurking around most of us would be just plain stupid to waste our time and peace fearing our neighbors. When 9/11 happened the targets were the center of world trade and world military domination and possibly the WH were the oilman pResident was living. I have always believed that there was method to their madness. They sent a message by hitting these strategic targets. I have trouble believing that AQ is interested in hitting a non-strategic targets like a football stadium since there would be no message. Individual terrorist (both foreign and home grown) may hit some target indiscriminately with no reason but an organized group with a goal is not going to do that.

History shows us that even the individual terrorist has reasons for believing he/she should hit a certain target: McVeigh hit a federal building in revenge for federal actions he did not like, the letter bomber is another example.

The fear that *ss and Co. want us to feel is unreasonable if we bother to think about it. What we should fear is an administration that is using fear to control us.
