wtf?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060816/ap_on_el_se/democratic_ad_hispanics

WASHINGTON - A Democratic political ad is under fire from Hispanics who say it unfairly compares Latino immigrants to terrorists.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sponsored a 35-second ad on its Web site that shows footage of two people scaling a border fence mixed with images of Osama Bin Laden and North Korea President Kim Jong Il.

Pedro Celis, chairman of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, said in a statement Tuesday that the DSCC should remove the ad because it vilifies illegal Hispanic immigrants and is "appalling."

Houston City Councilwoman Carol Alvarado, a Democrat, sent a letter to DSCC Chairman Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record) of New York asking that the ad be pulled. She said it could alienate Latino voters.

"To liken Latino immigrants to bazooka-toting terrorists not only undermines the positive relationship our party has with this community, but also lowers us to a despicable level as breeders of unfounded fear and hatred," Alvarado wrote.

watch the ad
they really should not have included the Southern border at all. The ad was perfect and then they fucked it up putting that in.

2. Here we go again - this is ad #2 to invoke a response from an outraged
group.

The first ad pissed off the Republicans because it showed *GASP* flag-draped coffins of dead soldiers. I guess if you don't see it it doesn't exist, right?

And now this. Those people jumping the fence are breaking the law, are they not? Just like our President is doing. And so many of our elected officials. Do we give them all a pass because if we hold them accountable for their actions someone will get upset?

We have laws in this country for a reason. We cannot make exceptions, because there will be no end in sight if we do. At some point, we must put our foot down and say "Enough is enough!"

14. The thing is, Andy, that conflating poor people who are trying to
find work with terrorists because they are brown is deeply offensive to those of us who are documented American citizens. Who were born and raised here, who have voted with and for Democrats and who rely on the party to abstain from Republican tactics.

27. I think you are missing the point
If poor peaple looking for work can sneak in so can terrorists. There is no conflation here saying they are the same.

29. No, I got that point. But as we have seen, the Republicans
have gone all out to enflame their base against brown people. That's the only reason that image has any power.

So, yes, there is a conflation between terrorists and brown people. Usually it's Republicans that go for that kind of thing.

We have no real concern over "security" or our borders, ports and freight would be secure. We wouldn't be worried about nannies and day laborers.

32. We have laws in this land. We must all abide by them. If we don't like
them, we should do what we can to change them, but in the meantime we must all abide by them. That goes for the President, all the way down to the poorest person in the country. We cannot make exceptions.

Regardless of the color of their skin, anyone who jumps fences to sneak into the country is starting off on the wrong foot. They are breaking the law. Period. I don't care if it's white people from Canada, or anyone else, they have to abide by our laws.

Our President doesn't feel he has to do that, and you can see where that's getting us.

If the immigration laws are unfair, difficult, or expensive to live by, they should be changed. But sneaking over a fence is not an acceptable option. If you want to live in America, you have to recognize its laws and obey them. I would think all documented American citizens, born and raised here, would be angry to see people breaking the law, attempting to avoid doing what's necessary to become a citizen legally.

3. You'd think that instead of demonizing undocumented workers
the DLC might think about registering some Latinos.

The word that comes to mind is "unteachable".

5. Another brilliant move by the geniuses running the party.
After the repugs played the race card against immigrants, the Dems follow suit.

9. I just don't get it, maybe I'm stupid. Aren't there more Hispanics
who vote for Democrats than there are racist @ssholes who vote for Democrats? Or maybe, someone was going for that swing racist @sshole vote?

And handing the Thuggery the high ground. A really bad idea. Howard Dean must be furious after all his hard work reaching out to all kinds of people.

Apparantly, Schumer and his pals can't read numbers without dollar signs attached to them.

11. Or, they know our elections are rigged and figure it doesn't matter.
My grandfather used to help stage elections in El Salvador. The art is to make people feel they count while you screw them into the ground. Ugly business.

12. Well, the Dems are doing a fine job of showing the lack of a difference.
The Repugs use the Hispanic bogeyman, and the Dems use the Hispanic bogeyman. I'm not Hispanic (tho' I am the son of an immigrant), but if I was, I'd begin to think that both parties aren't worth voting for.

Methinks, the "leaders" may be misjudging the willingness of the Hispanics to hold their noses. They've pretty much worn out mine.

20. Maybe it is because so many are low income?

I know the low income thing is touchy and playing the class war card etc but aren't most ads like directed more toward the middle income group, so maybe they are the target for this one and the people who made it are thinking that the higher income group will be more likely to respond to the idea of being scared of immigrants and think they are terrorists, etc. Because it has always been that immigrants are low income for the first generation and then middle income in the second generation, and after that who knows? But now since the economy has changed so much we don't know if that will happen with these immigrants, because so many of the middle group have to move down because of the new conditions, war on terror, etc. And I don't really get a feeling that there is like a big movement to have the low income group voting a lot and stuff, they have to work so much it is just a different point of view, if you get to know low income people, it is hard to explain, but it is like people who are better off believe more in elections etc. So maybe the people who made the ad didn't think that too many immigrants would see it, and if they did, maybe they are ones that can't vote because they are low income or are citizens that work too much to vote and don't have that much faith in elections anyway.

And, it was such a short blip that hopefully it won't register with too many people.

21. There was this study that said how people feel is more important

I wish I could find the link to it, maybe somebody else will know. Anyway it wasn't about politics it was about companies and it showed that if the companies would have these meetings and let people complain and make suggestions that even if the company didn't really change anything having the meeting made people feel better and have a more positive feeling about their company and their job.

16. Too bad she can't "triangulate" her way out of office.
The poster girl for the "Not as Bad" wing of the party. Although, in her case, it's the "Almost as Bad" wing.

I'd put my fingers in the blender before I'd vote for her.

don't worry about the illegals getting off the plane at JFK, destroying their documents on the plane and such. A real healthy percentage.. They should have an immigration court at JFK operating 24/7.
