Spontaneously make up the "nickname" Macaca?
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 12:32 PM by The_Casual_Observer
And then have it turn out to have a derogatory meaning in a foreign language that he grew up with at home? What are the chances of that happening?

allen is a coward and a liar.

3. I actually believe Allen.
I totally believe Allen is just a total racist that he just makes up racist shit as he goes along. I personally have no clue what "macaca" means or even heard it as a word before but I had no doubt in my mind the very first time I heard the whole comment that it was total racist scum BS.

4. My take - he is either a fool or he wanted that remark recorded
and broadcast. He knew the remark was being taped by his opponent.

Possibly he is trying to rally his racist base. Disgusting.

8. Either way
Did he think the guy was a native American? Was he trying to slur them too? I see, he paints with a VERY broad brush no matter what can he draws it from.

7. I'll go with the fool part. He was visibly agitated about the "spy"
and called him out in a weird childish way.

10. Felix Allen is not that smart...
I think he just let down his guard for a moment and let his true colors show. He was speaking in front of a "friendly" (i.e. white fundie bigots) audience and he was playing up to them.

9. I still think
he was looking for Senator Akaka.

Mr. Akaka... Macaca... Easy to get them mixed up. Besides, Akaka is a Democrat, which is the same as an immigrant terrorist to Allen.

12. Odd, I read a comment from Allen that he was repeating a nickname
given to Sidarth by one of his staffers. Did I imagine that excuse, or is he just fishing around for one until something gets him out of trouble?

That's from CNN's web site.

I nominate it as headline of the day.

A) I learned through DU that Allen's ex-colonist mother would certainly have known this word which is a 'hard' fact linking Allen to the usage (and also that it is in circulation among white supremacist groups which is more of a 'soft' fact because I don't know that he would know these groups and their jargon). This is a racist epithet (macaca) that I had never heard of before, so I didn't know what to make of the whole controversy. But there's very good reason to believe that George Allen does know the word.

and B) I saw the video-thanks to Jon Stewart and the Daily Show-in which Allen clearly uses the word twice and pronounces it very distinctly, which means it's no Freudian slip. A lapsus linguae wouldn't mean Allen was less of a racist necessarily, but it could move the incident into a gray area of the unintended insult, which many people would forgive more readily.

There is no question in my mind now that Senator Allen knew what he was saying--he just didn't think he'd be caught for saying it because of the obscurity of his language. If I had been in the crowd that day I would not have understood what he meant by "Mr. Macaca"--but I would have understood it was part of an insult. Allen says he wants to "welcome Mr. Macaca to America", as though he can tell Siddarth cannot be American just by looking at him. A racist insult is clearly intended already even if no "bad words" are involved. Then you add in Allen's use of a racial epithet...oh yeah, this jerk is a racist all right.

He's a racist practicing his craft, in fact. I'd say Allen felt carried away in the moment by the implicit racism of his politics and gave an overt expression of what essentially he's saying all the time in his appeals: we are the real Americans; "they"--the ones who don't look like us--don't belong here. Come together-by race-and vote for me, so we won't have to share power with the "macacas" in our country."

17. "Welcome to America" right.
Allen began by saying that he was "going to run this campaign on positive, constructive ideas" and then pointed at S.R. Sidarth in the crowd.....
