2. Nice--Franco will boost Ed's cred among yinzers
I routinely sense the vibe that the natives of western PA consider Rendell to be too Philly-centric.

3. Swan came out in support of Hazleton's quasi "whites only" law
He gave some flaccid and half-assed "the community has to do what it thinks is right" sort of response.

I'm disgusted that a town in my own state would legislate the exclusion of immigrants rather than working to help them integrate legally. Nice to see that Swan has come down on the side of arch-nationalism.

5. again with the false meme
they have not made ANY legislation in regards to immigrants i am aware of

the legislation was in regards to ILLEGAL immigrants

this is a classic rhetorical spin trick

any time any legislation or actions are taken against illegal immigration, refer to the laws/policies as "anti immigrant"

that's false

these are not anti immigrant laws

they are anti ILLEGAL immigrant laws

7. Seems to me there are plenty of laws already on the books.
That aren't being enforced very well already.
Why do you think these "new" ones are designed to do anything but confuse the voters in November?

9. why do u make up things
i didn't say anything of the sort

i didn't even say i supported the laws

in fact, i am against them

but that's irrelevant to my point

let's try again.

they are not anti IMMIGRANT law

they are anti-ILLEGAL immigrant laws

don't assume that i think what you thought i did, cause i don't

8. Sure, as are anti-gun laws
There are plenty of laws on the books dealing with illegal gun use, for example.

Anyway, when almost the entirety of the illegal immigrant population is Latino, it's not hard to imagine how such laws come across as anti-Latino.

NPR ran a piece on this yesterday with comments from legal immigrants living in the Hazleton area. They expressed discomfort and a sense of betrayal due to the law, as well as describing a vibe distinctly hostile to Latinos in general.

10. that's great
and honest discussion is fine

but referring to these laws as anti-immigrant is not

cause it's rhetorical spin at best, and frankly, it's a lie

and i didn't say the laws were or weren't anti-latino

read what i wrote...

i said they are not anti IMMIGRANT laws

they are anti-ILLEGAL immigrant laws

11. Well, read what *I* wrote
I'm disgusted that a town in my own state would legislate the exclusion of immigrants rather than working to help them integrate legally. Nice to see that Swann has come down on the side of arch-nationalism.

I would think, from the context, that it should be clear that the passage refers to illegal immigrants ("help them integrate legally").

And a law needn't be expressly anti-Latino to be anti-Latino for all intents and purposes. Similarly, many proposed abortion laws are anti-woman without ever coming right out and stating it that way.

Parenthetically, what effect are you attempting with your sporadic punctuation and capitalization?

12. here;s what you wrote
i cite:

"I'm disgusted that a town in my own state would legislate the exclusion of immigrants "

they have not done that

the legislation says NOTHING about immigrants. only ILLEGAL immigrants

all your spin aside, that initial comment was rhetoric at best, or a lie at worst

but it was undeniably false eother way

immigrant =/= illegal immigrant

so nice way to evade the issue

i quoted you so you know exactly to what i refer

13. Illegal immigrants are immigrants, are they not?
Would it be better, in your view, to kick out all illegal immigrants (whose only crime, let's say, is their means of entry into the country), or is it preferable to integrate them into the community? All spin aside, answer that question for me.

A law that singles out (legal or illegal) immigrants who belong overwhelmingly to a specific ethnic group has a negative impact on members of that ethnic group. It creates an air of permissiveness about exclusion, segregation, and persecution. You can bitch all day about what you perceive as false but it won't change that fact (though how you can identify an expression of opinion as "undeniably false eother way" is beyond me).

And for pity's sake it's really annoying to read your half-baked faux-e.e. cummings writing style.

16. sophistry and nonsense
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 12:50 PM by sgxnk
god, the extent some people will go to, to defend the indefensible

there is clearly a distinction between IMMIGRANTS, and ILLEGAL immigrants. the latter are a criminal subset of the former.

ill quote you again

"legislate the exclusion of immigrants "

it does not LEGISLATE THE EXCLUSION OF IMMIGRANTS

it does nothing of the sort.

when a law ONLY references activity by the LATTER, then it is referred to as a law affecting ILLEGAL immigrants

get real

truly amazing sophomoric nonsense.

and again, you evade into all sorts of tangents since you can't simply admit that (lord forbid) you were wrong to say the law refers to immigrants qua immigrants

when the whole issue is about ILLLEGAL immigrants

and you only belittle yourself with this petty nonsense

the law criminalizes activity in regards to people who have ILLEGALLY entered this country.

referring to those people as immigrants (without qualification that the law only refers to ILLEGAL immigrants) is like criticizing a law that criminalizes shoplifting by calling it an "anti-shopper" bill

amazing. you make about as much sense as an intelligent design ideologue trying to explain away evolution

yer ideology is showing.
