Dem Congressional Candidate withdraws / domestic violence charges
Studebaker Withdraws From Bid For Congress

POSTED: 6:56 am EDT August 16, 2006
UPDATED: 7:11 am EDT August 16, 2006

DAYTON, Ohio -- Democratic candidate for the Third Congressional District, Stephanie Studebaker, announced Tuesday that she is withdrawing from the race.

The decision came after deputies arrested her and her husband, Samuel, on Sunday on charges of misdemeanor domestic violence.

NewsCenter 7 spoke with the chairman of the Montgomery County Democratic party, Dennis Lieberman on Tuesday night. He said the party is disappointed that Studebaker withdrew from the race, but said the party understands and respects her decision.

The Board of Elections must set up a special election for Democratic candidates who want to run against Republican incumbent Mike Turner in November.

This is a shame.

1. Does she beat her husband, or is she a victim of domestic violence.
I'm asking a serious question. If she is a victim, it sounds like she is being punished for reporting it. Horrible example for other battered women.

6. previous stories are at the IP site:
The Studebakers were taken to the Montgomery County Jail, where they were booked and then released after posting bonds of $25,000 each.

According to the incident report, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the couple’s home around 10 a.m. Sunday morning and spoke to the couple. The report states that Samuel Studebaker, 39, told deputies his wife had been beating him.

Stephanie Studebaker, 45, reported she had been hit by her husband.

Stephanie Studebaker is a candidate for Ohio’s Third Congressional District. She is running against Republican incumbent Mike Turner.

9. Her husband beat her up, I understand she shoved him.
He called his father 45 miles away who delivered what appears to be a prepared spiel to the 911 operator. This whole thing is really odd. I am waiting for more details to come out, those who know Stephanie tell me this is simply not within her character at all. That is all I know but it is from a confidential source close to Ms. Studebaker.

2. I know nothing about her.
But if a candidate (either party) isn't squeaky clean they had better keep on walking because charges of this type will be like wearing an albatross around their necks.

There are plenty of potential candidates without any baggage.

4. When I read the story yesterday
I found it odd that she was booked a full 10 hours after her husband was.

The police at the scene obviously found no evidence.

It smells like phone calls were made at the very least.

7. This was not a competative race to begin with
If the GOP were to go after someone, they would go after someone who had a chance of winning.

11. I'm thinking of relatives or inlaws with grudges
although the GOP dirty tricksters aren't that picky. The GOP is scared. They know they're in trouble and aren't above using any advantage they can find, anywhere they can.

Who knows? This is all conjecture. All I know is that a ten hour gap between arrests is very fishy.

All-Star Finalist: Stephanie Studebaker

I'm a mother, veterinarian, and lifelong resident of Ohio's 3rd District. During the 2004 presidential election I served as Governor Dean's communications director for the state of Ohio. Now I am running for office because I'm sick and tired of a Congress and a President that aren't responsive to the people. For the last few years I've done everything I could to try and bring some reason back to my government.

I served as a precinct captain for my neighborhood, started an Ohio based grassroots organization, and poured my heart into defeating George W. Bush. Now I'm determined to step out of the profession I love to serve my country as a citizen legislator, just like our founding fathers intended. Politicians got government into the mess we're in now, and it's up to regular folks like me to set things right.

8. A damned shame
:eyes:
I met and heard heard her a few times pre-primary, and thought she was
going to be a strong candidate. Frankly, I wonder if there's a 'pug cop or
supervisor involved somewhere along the chain of command. Sorry, but
cynical conspiracy thoughts are inescapable these past few years...

10. She sounded like a good candidate
and I wouldn't think a dv incident should necessarily mean withdrawing. Lots of people survive worse things and still run. There are no perfect people out there.
