Police want 'instant justice' (UK)
Police are seeking new powers of "instant justice" to combat anti-social behaviour and bypass the courts, according to reports.

The Association of Chief Police Officers (Apco) is considering pressing ministers to dispense punishment without the need for a court appearance.

Among the proposals are the immediate exclusion of teenagers from town centres at night and to ban streets gang members from associating with each other.

<snip>
In the above scenarios, the sentences would effectively be passed on the streets with an appeal to courts later.

1. The car compacting doesn't take thieves into account either.
They'd be compacting cars of unsuspecting owners because the thieves have no license or insurance.

Then they can appeal to court later. HA!

3. the mere fact that police are asking for this indicates...

...that the ideological underpinnings of democratic society and a system of justice based on respect for individual rights and a presumption of innocence are crumbling. By simply asking for this, the police reveal that they can never again be trusted as honest participants in that society. Just asking for the power is enough to break faith with centuries of judicial tradition.
