Feb. 23, 2002 -- NEW YORK (APJP) -- New York Police Department sources confirm to American Politics Journal that conservative commentator and editorialist John Fund was arrested this morning in New York City and charged with assault.

The charge stems from an alleged incident earlier in the week involving Fund and his former girlfriend, Morgan Pillsbury.

I pretty much can't stand Joe so I turn him off after KO. He does have his occasional moments of lucidity and I'm very sorry I missed this one.
I'm interested in what Lawrence O'Donnell had to say about the topic. Did he go easy on the Chimperor as he sometimes does or did he let it rip? I'd love to know what he had to say on the subject since I think he's a very smart man who knows the ways of D.C., and I just can't see him thinking Chimpy has much going for him in the intelligence or competence department. Any tidbits you want to share?

"As democracy is perfected, the office of the president represents more and more closely the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." --H.L. Mencken

41. Ike was not considered too bright at the time
He mangled his syntax (though the newspapers generally cleaned it up), was the first president to say noo-kyu-lar, and was generally considered an easy-going nonentity. Compared to either Stevenson, who ran against him, or Kennedy, who came after him, he was far from intellectual.

But in retrospect he looks like a mental giant compared to the morons the Republicans have run in recent years. Since Nixon, there hasn't been a one of them with anything worth mentioning above the eyebrows, whereas the Democrats generally tend to pick candidates on the basis of their smarts.

Since the Republicans keep winning election with their doofuses, it wouldn't seem they have anything to complain about -- and it's hardly a proof of media bias that this occasionally gets pointed out.

82. That may have been just cover. Ike was aware he looked a little
bumbling, and took advantage of it. He once told one of his aides before a press conference that if a certain uncomfortable topic came up he would "just confuse them". All he had to do was mangle his syntax and the reporters would write the whole thing off, so it worked.

Unlike Bu**sh**, it really was an act. Try reading a biography of Eisenhower -- he really did phenomenally well at the Army's War College, IIRC. Much more importantly, he had gobs more character and integrity than the current void in the Oval Office.

I really quit watching his show about a year ago but recently I have been looking in to see what he is up to. Do any of you remember when he was playing Radiohead as segway music? I missed his segment last night about Borat and Ali G but read the transcript. Is he trying to appeal to a new demographic? Today, he sat in for Tucker and really made fun of the republicans for the ad about Hillary. Maybe he is waking up too. I am not holding my breath.

This piece was especially fun. I used to turn him off too but 2 or 3 months ago I discovered that he had seen the light (at least in part) and is no longer a neocon fan. Still a conservative but, at least he seems to be a real conservative, not one of those lying, spineless NEO conservatives.

49. Is there any way we can get his latest ratings?
If what the polls indicate are true (that the general populace is growing more and more discontent with the current administration) maybe his ratings have been on the slide. So, he changes his ways to be a bit more popular and viola - his ratings go up.

56. You have a really good point.
Why is he still in office?

My theory: The same reason the various criminal heads of State remained in office most of the 20th Century. The nations that supported them were either destroyed literally or conditions became so intolerable they were hung from lampposts. More than a few died of old age or the political/economic systems they created just crumbled. My theory is Bush and the criminal Neo-Cons will either fall due to economic collapse, or in utter destruction of miscalculated war.

Also,if Bush were to disappear tomorrow, due to say an accident with a pretzel, he would be replaced by various Neo-Cons as bad or worse.

Is it possible that Scarborough has woken up, maybe just a little bit? I could never stand to watch more than a few minutes of his show, but I seem to recall seeing that he was in NO and I'm pretty sure his coverage of Katrina was decent rather than looking desperately for any excuse, any angle that would make George look like he was doing a "heck of a job".

Maybe I'm remembering wrong or maybe it's just a ploy for ratings.

68. It took them six years to start asking this question?
Baloney, this is just stirring the ratings pot.

Scarborough probably needs to get a bunch of emails, to prove to the bosses that somebody is watching.

70. John Fund is wrong about Bush.
Perennial Bush apologist John Fund attempted to convince Joe and his viewers that no, the president actually is intelligent, he's just inarticulate. Sorry, John. Language is thought. A person who thinks clearly will speak clearly. One who does not will not.

There is substantial evidence that Bush's judgment is impaired by his inability to move beyond childish, black-and-white views of complex situations. This is hardly a sign of advanced intelligence. Indeed, it is a sign of stunted mental development.

I suggest that Fund be challenged to name someone, anyone, who is widely acknowledged to be highly intelligent but who nonetheless cannot form an English sentence or express complex thoughts involving multi-syllable words. I don't see how it's possible. Whom would he name?

As an aside, Fund himself is extremely articulate and much more intelligent than the little man he so foolishly defends.

81. Uh, that's a little too big of a broad brush
A person who thinks clearly will speak clearly. One who does not will not.

What about stutterers? Do they not think clearly, evidenced by their stutter?

BTW I do agree with you on Bush.

71. Better half missed it, show was great,
Anyone have a link? Is it on YouTube? Somewhere? Anywhere. I want to see it again. Maybe I could make a car sign referring people to watch it. Something like "Curious about Bush's intellect? Go to
www...and see for yourself!

78. Bush used to be quite articulate.
I don't know if I'd say he was eloquent, but he could speak clearly, at a normal pace, using complete sentences and real words.

Something's happened to this guy in the last 10 years. I don't know whether he's going senile, or if he's been prescribed some sort of drug that impairs his mental functions, or if he's just plain fallen off the wagon and become a drunk again- but something's wrong with the man.

79. Believe it or not, I have never seen a Bush-ism. I can't stand to look at
him. If he were telling me that I had won a million dollars, I would not know it unless someone else told me about it.

EVERYTHING about him irks me. There are some people who irritate you just by breathing. Bush is one of those for me.

But, having said that, I did watch the stuff last night. I did not realize the Bush isms were so bad. I have heard of them, of course, and had sorta gotten the idea they were funny. Thus the name Bush isms - like they were cute.

I was appalled at how bad that make US look. I believe Joe said something about the rest of the world thinking we are not to bright for electing him - or maybe that was another show.

Is Bush an idiot?

The greatest political gift a politician can receive from enemies is the gift of being underestimated.

Democrats have always played into Republican presidents’ hands by dismissing them as dimwitted dunces who somehow stumbled their way into the most powerful position on Earth.

Eisenhower was supposedly a dope who frittered away his time on golf courses.

Chevy Chase portrayed Gerald Ford as a bumbling, accident-prone commander-in-chief in countless SNL skits.

Ronald Reagan was branded a lightweight for years and described as a confused old fool in Tip O’Neill’s autobiography.

For the past six years George W. Bush has been the target of ridicule from liberal circles. But now, instead of laughing at Democrats’ ill-directed arrogance, Republicans are quietly joining the left in questioning the President’s intellectual prowess.

The biggest knock on Bush’s brain is his lack of intellectual curiosity. Former administration officials still close to the White House will tell you Mr. Bush detests dissent, embraces a narrow world view and is intellectually incurious.
