"Make It Right"

My motto from now on. Simple. One rule.

When I have to deal with an issue, the safest, most ethical, most prudent way to go, is to try and make it right.

Get your ego out of the way. Do the right thing.

Americans are good at pretending we do the right thing.

Nobody is doing the right thing.

Egos, egos, everywhere.

2. Egos suck

I'd rather NOT have people "do the right thing" just because they feel it's the right thing. It only counts if people really, truly WANT to do the right thing and don't think of it in those terms.

People need to get back to being genuine.

3. The rewards of doing the right thing just because they

feel it's the right thing often pays off in rewards that make it genuine the next time.

And, quite frankly, doing the right thing even when you might not really want to is more laudable. Ethical behavior is never wrong.

5. I think it's dysfunctional

People should really want to do the right thing, not just because someone is watching. I would hope doing the right thing gives someone a feeling they want to duplicate by doing the right thing again.

Keeping up appearances is dysfunctional. I'll take it over the alternative, but...

7. I'm not talking about anyone watching.

The times you do the right thing just because it is the right thing are usually the times nobody's going to know about it but you...when you give back the extra change the checker gave you or point out that a couple items weren't rung up even though you can use the extra money. When you take the time to notify the owner of the car you dinged in the parking lot even when there's nobody around and you know it's going to play hell with your insurance. When you pick up the phone to report your neighbor who's abusing his/her kids.

Doing what's right is NOT about appearances. It's about being an ethical, decent human being even when it's not convenient or easy for you.

Always do the right thing even when it is the hard thing. My grandfather told me that when I was small. He also told me to always be nice to people. Those two things have gotten me farther in life than anything else I have ever done.
