Adoption Contradiction
Regarding "Contradictions In Ad" (Letters, Aug. 8):
The adoption system in Florida is horrible. Children can die waiting. I guess that's more acceptable than letting committed, monogamous gay couples adopt them.
Here's a fact: Most gays and lesbians are born to married heterosexual couples, usually with heterosexual siblings, being taught good family values in loving households. Gays and lesbians are born, not made.
To the politicians who pander to the small-minded in the name of Christian values, shame on you. Those who call your small-minded beliefs Christian values, shame on you. I'm a married heterosexual mother of a wonderful, kind, educated, very successful gay son. In my son, I know the God I believe in shines.

Ad Watch: Tom Gallagher

By KEVIN BEGOS The Tampa Tribune
Published: Aug 8, 2006
Ad Title: Delta
Message: Gallagher discusses gay marriage, abortion, adoption and adult billboards.
Content: It's filled with shots of children playing and husbands and wives holding hands. Gallagher narrates the ad and presents himself as a staunch defender of family values.
Breaking It Down:
Ad: "As governor, I won't allow liberal judges from Massachusetts to redefine marriage in our state."
Fact check: Judges in other states don't interpret our laws, Florida judges do - no matter who the governor is.
Ad: "We need a constitutional ban on gay marriage. A 24-hour waiting period on abortion."
Fact check: Gallagher may be promising more than he can deliver. Any abortion law likely would end up before the U.S. Supreme Court. A governor who pushes a ban on gay marriage could help put that issue before Florida voters, who would have the final say on a constitutional amendment.
I am lucky to have such a great mom and pain in my ass...
