My Mother's LTTE - Adoption / Gays / and more...

Adoption Contradiction

Regarding "Contradictions In Ad" (Letters, Aug. 8):

The adoption system in Florida is horrible. Children can die waiting. I guess that's more acceptable than letting committed, monogamous gay couples adopt them.

Here's a fact: Most gays and lesbians are born to married heterosexual couples, usually with heterosexual siblings, being taught good family values in loving households. Gays and lesbians are born, not made.

To the politicians who pander to the small-minded in the name of Christian values, shame on you. Those who call your small-minded beliefs Christian values, shame on you. I'm a married heterosexual mother of a wonderful, kind, educated, very successful gay son. In my son, I know the God I believe in shines.

PAULA BOWIE

Ad Watch: Tom Gallagher
Skip directly to the full story.

By KEVIN BEGOS The Tampa Tribune

Published: Aug 8, 2006

Ad Title: Delta

Message: Gallagher discusses gay marriage, abortion, adoption and adult billboards.

Content: It's filled with shots of children playing and husbands and wives holding hands. Gallagher narrates the ad and presents himself as a staunch defender of family values.

Breaking It Down:

Ad: "As governor, I won't allow liberal judges from Massachusetts to redefine marriage in our state."

Fact check: Judges in other states don't interpret our laws, Florida judges do - no matter who the governor is.

Ad: "We need a constitutional ban on gay marriage. A 24-hour waiting period on abortion."

Fact check: Gallagher may be promising more than he can deliver. Any abortion law likely would end up before the U.S. Supreme Court. A governor who pushes a ban on gay marriage could help put that issue before Florida voters, who would have the final say on a constitutional amendment.

I am lucky to have such a great mom and pain in my ass...

4. For a second
I thought LTTE stood for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam- or the Tamil Tigers, a militant group in Sri Lanka.

Your mom writes very well.

9. Your mom rocks
I live 1/2 hour from Brooksville and also have to deal with that incomparable moron Ginny Brown Waite as my congresscritter.

What a great, intelligent Mom you have! You must be so proud. And isn't what she's saying just pure, unadulterated sensible?

10. So a little about my mother...
Thank you all for the kind words...

My mother is a cancer survivor, not once, not twice, but 4 times. My father and her divorced at about my .6 birthday. She raised me alone till about 9, until she meet my step-dad, the greatest man in the world. I am his son, no questions asked.

She works very hard as a dog groomer in Tampa. She has very bad carpel tunnel in her hand, and because of the cancers her health insurance would cost $800 a month, she made $21,000 a year, do the math. She is uninsured.….

She is great woman, she can be a real bitch at times, and we do not always see eye to eye but I love her to death….
