In MHO, this Chuck Roberts/ CNN apology is a big deal....
I can't recall the last time I saw an MSM'er apologizing for something like this... Ariana/Media Matters, etc--plus the whole blog-sphere led the charge on this and apparently CNN and Roberts heard us.

The worm is turning---slowly but surely.

1. Adults apologize when they've done wrong. Roberts apologized.
It's not the usual treatment we get from the media or public officials, especially GOP public officials, but this time it came through.

Good for Roberts.

26. He should have been either fired or at least suspended for.....
a few weeks. Saying he's sory is fine. But the damage was done and can't be un-done. And exactly what kind of mindset must he have to have said such a thing?

I've got no use for the SOB nor for CNN's attempt at being Faux.

4. Hell Yes It Is!
The outcry against his comment was enormous, and the man went on air and apologized to Ned for what he said. THE SYSTEM WORKED. Where do we expect accountability in the media to start? Do we really think that Fox News is going to start broadcasting objective journalism at 12:01 am tonight? Or that it will magically go away, leaving a blank hole on the dial? Of course not.

THIS IS HOW THE SYSTEM IS CORRECTED. I think this *could be* the start of a sea change in journalism. Roberts did a sleazy thing last week, but he did the right thing today. We must, we must, WE MUST remain vigilant, however. Remember, we made him apologize. I hope he'll think twice about making dumb ass remarks like that. I hope even more that other reporters will too.

I emailed Roberts last week to rip him a new one for the comment. After he apologized today, I wrote him and thanked him for owning up to his mistake and taking responsibility for it. I would encourage everyone to do the same.

7. You're ringing true blue here, MrCoffee, and I second your remarks,
even though you've made them about as well as they can be made.

Adults are governed by prescribed social expectations of their public conduct.

In this instance, Roberts met those expectations and deserves a tip of the hat.

(I also like your comments on this subject in another current thread. Thank you.)

11. I'd like to email him support for his decision also.
Can you give his email address here?

I agree completely: it isn't enough to complain about mistakes and wrong-headedness. We have to show support when it is merited. An apology like this is important and he needs to hear that we commend him for it.

18. After I noted here that I wrote to Roberts, I saw quite a few
posters who discouraged writing to CNN. I wonder why they would discourage our first amendment right? hmmm.

I'm not sure we "made" him apologize, but we reminded him that we're watching. We brought to his attention that we will not allow slanderous comments to float under the radar. It's too important to not be complacent, now of all times.

Our comments and the discourse of the American people may well save our country, yet!

P.S. I wrote to him to recognize his apology

8. I think they got a barrage of emails
Including mine. I sent a thank you to him for stepping up even if I think it may have been the networks decision. We do make a difference with activism even though most of the time we don't see the results. This was nice.

20. Media only apologizes publicly when threatened with VERY
costly (& justified, winnable) LITIGATION.

Period.

He'll be reassigned soon. Or Mehlmannn will 'recruit" him.

Edited on Tue Aug-15-06 08:40 PM by BrightKnight
He looked like a rock solid statesman with both feet planted firmly on the ground.

The loony left rhetoric is apparently coming from the loose cannon going of in Lieberman's head. Lieberman is the only lunatic in this campaign.
