Bloomfield man arrested on terrorism charges near Bradley airport
By:Megan Collins, Journal Inquirer
08/14/2006

WINDSOR LOCKS - A Bloomfield man was arrested Sunday and charged with terrorism and threatening based on remarks he made to a rental car shuttle bus driver, police said today.

Yoav Friedmann of was held on $100,000 bond for an appearance in Enfield Superior Court today, police said.

He was charged with an act of terrorism, first-degree threatening, and second-degree breach of peace.

The arrest was based upon a complaint from a rental car shuttle bus driver, police said.

While returning from the airport to the rental car company, Friedmann asked the shuttle bus driver about international flights arriving and departing Bradley International Airport, police said.

Police said that the shuttle driver attempted to change the subject and asked Friedmann whether he was sure that there was a vehicle reserved for him.

Friedmann replied that there had better be or he was going to blow the place up, police said.

1. Sounds to me...
Like someone with some serious impulse control issues. After all, juxtaposing "blow" and "up" in a modern airport ain't exactly a genius-level idea.

3. Anyone who jokes about blowing shit up at airports these days...
...deserves to get one serious cavity search, and a few days with the Stupid Police. WTF was this guy thinking? Oh, wait...he obviously wasn't.

4. Of course he's a terrorist!
I mean, a first name like "Yoav"? Clearly the guy's a terrorist based on that alone. And he's asking about "international" {wink, wink} flights? Airplanes? Like the ones flown into the World Trade Center Towers? Rental cars, like the ones used to set off a bomb in the parking garage of the WTC? And, and, and, you know, "Yoav"? As the high priest famously inquired, "What more evidence do we need?!"

There. As airtight a case for terrorism as you could possibly want. Another triumph for the Bush administration! Hallelujah!

7. This "terrorism" stuff is a serious charge.
You could be put away for years for absolutely nothing. There are too many cases of false charges these days to just ignore the problem & assume it only happens to "somebody else".

9. I Smell Big Assed Suit Here
National Airport (before it was renamed) when a guy made an innocent remark about bombs (or explosives or hijacking - I was 14 at the time & that was...uh...32 years ago.) Airport police detained him, he sued. Airport cops claimed immunity by way of those half-assed signs about "Making Jokes About..." Court ruled that police actions have to meet "reasonableness" standard - if a reasonable man could tell he wasn't making a direct threat police have no immunity. Settled for undisclosed (but probably large) sum. Time we smack these goosesteppers down again.

10. The very sad and scary thing here is
that this guy could be held for years without being charged with anything. They've already proven that the possibility exists. America is as scary place as there is in the world right now.......that doesnt have bombs landing on it.

12. basically he was arrested for having a lame sense of humor
the facts of the incident:

Yoav is an Israeli native (hence the name...) who served 3 years in the IDF (Israeli army) and was honorably discharged as first sgt. the guy spent 3 years fighting terrorism.

The alleged "info milking" about international flights leaving Bradley airport was just Yoav trying to start a conversation with the shuttle driver. perhaps i should also mention that this information is publicly available and published by the airport.

The so called threat was a joke, and was actually phrased more like: "what do you mean no car? i'll shoot them!"

my comments about the incident:

the bombing part is the figment of the driver's imagination and paranoia. one might also wonder if the shuttle driver's uncomfortable feeling might have anything to do with a middle eastern accent.
The simplest background check could have shown the police that there was no way the incident is terror related. Oddly, no one bothered with this normal police routine.
The arrest has taken place AFTER Yoav left the car rental agency, but under the terror prevention law. I must wonder what prevention was possible after he did not go thru with the "threat".
The concept of a threat implies that the subject of the threat needs to know about it, otherwise the threat is pointless. The car rental agency did not know anything about the so called threat (after all they did have a car for him)

in case you wonder what my source of information might be, i'm yoav's brother.

14. he probably won't sue
he feels the incident was his fault. personally i think he should sue the police or whoever it was who decided to arrest him without even interrogating him, but it's not my decision to make.
