What Mike Malloy said about airlines passengers monday show
I agree , and I not only thought is was funny but entirely true .

Americans are so spoiled and this believe it or not makes then weak and lazy and apathetic .

I see people every single day who insist on hauling all sorts of toys everywhere .

New parents rush out and buy an enormous SUV with the reasoning they need this much room or they feel safer in a big road hog . I have to ask myself and apply common sense , how is this safer now when just about everyone has an SUV , did'nt this in reality defeat the purpose and in fact make the small economy car driver with saving in mind more in danger ? I thing so .

Everywhere you go people waste and whine . Everyday at noon they hope into their cars or SUV to drive off to get lunch , wouldn't a home made lunch save in many ways , most ofter it is a fast food fat meal they seek and this has all the evidence in their girth and stride not to mention fuel consumption as the problem grows and expands .

Cell phones are now always active , places that were once the freezer department of the grocery store and now simulated personal phone booths . Try to get through a checkout line while someone is multi-tasking and proud of it putting everyone , well me , on hold . Then there are the cell ring tones as if I have not enough to be jumpy about , I need the start of an ipod downloaded ring tone to make my day or to watch an unattended cell vibrate across a desk or amplified held captive in a desk drawer vibrating then beeping warning of missed call , and what a call it must have been , a call to chatter about nothing or one to bring home a few items which will no doubt find it's way to a checkout counter .

I have flown a few times well before 9/11 , it was madness , carry on's forced into overhead compartments and above my head not theirs , I not only get an up and close meeting with someones belly but the added benefit of a concussion while I sit quietly in my seat hoping the plane holds together . I wonder who worked on the plane last and wonder in flight what that curled up patch of sheet metal on the wing is doing there , was it a temporary fix that was forgot , is it determined safe and if so by who . I don't want headphones or a movie or a user friendly pillow shared by all through the years . I want only the ride with hope of a safe landing . I bring as little as possible and nothing if lost will ruin my life .

People seem to feel the need to be entertained all waking hours , what is wrong with silence and reflection of reading a book . It was a constant flow of elbows and assholes streaming up and down the narrow aisles to and from the stainless restrooms with the rumble of voices and tatter of laptop keys . Sit down and stay there , get a drink before you board , does one really need their own personal water supply and toys to entertain . This is not and was never meant to be a home away from home , it is a means of transport and nothing more , the same as a car or bus .

The airlines should offer a discount for all who board empty handed and silent and a fee for each item and bag at the door .

2. Not enforcable. Ed Shultz was saying the same thing yesterday.
Their both wrong. This would discriminate against people with medical conditions that make it impossible to be without their supplies. My son has a medical condition that requries we bring a bag that not only contains his meds, but also foods. There is more to travelling with an illness than just the meds you bring on.

3. Malloy was being satirical.
There's a very important issue here, namely business travellers, who are the backbone of the airlines' business. These people travel by air every week, many of them every working day. These are people who need their laptop computers and other amenities. They travel lean and do not check their luggage because it is an extreme inconvenience to them. The airlines inconvenience these folks at their own risk.

Concerning liquids. Fuck TSA. I always take bottled water and food onboard. This allows me to eat when I want, especially since on many flights there is no food at all. It's also my routine to have a cocktail, or two on flights. Usually, I bring my own, which saves me a few bucks.

I love flying, but I really, really *hate* travelling by air. It's amongst the most demeaning and painful processes on the planet. From now on, to the extent that time allows, I'm going Amtrak.

4. i'm a traveler who HATES the carry on madness.
Edited on Tue Aug-15-06 01:48 PM by xchrom
i carry only a small bag with me on the airplane -- one that stuffs under the seat in front -- and that is it.

i see people carry EVERYTHING onto the plane with them -- much of which should be checked.

it's turned into a weird kind of entitlement -- and for one I'd be glad to see new rules enforced about it.

and btw -- i am someone who travels with meds -- they travel fine stuffed under the seat in front.

6. Carry-ons kill. Period.
As an ALPA (Air Line Pilots Association) airline accident investigator, I am aware of quite a few in-flight incidents where projectiles in the cabin (carry-ons) killed or maimed. Many more passengers have been killed or maimed in otherwise survivable crashes because of flying, unsecured projectiles in the cabin (including the darling little lap children that aren't quite precious enough for their parents to buy for them a regular seat with a regular seatbelt).

Don't get me started. Suffice it to say that three changes could greatly improve airline passenger survivability during hit-and-slide crashes (as opposed to hit-and-stick crashes, like into the side of a mountain): 1. BAN ALL CARRY-ON LUGGAGE; 2. BAN ALL LAP CHILDREN, and; 3. RECONFIGURE ALL AIRLINE PASSENGER CABINS WITH AFT (REARWARD) FACING SEATING.

Think about this. In the early days of airline travel, and into the jet age, the overhead bins were door-less and were called hat-racks. They were there for coats and hats only. The evolution of carry-ons has been a killer.

7. Why not business flights alone
Instead of everyone suffering then have flights for business only and regular flights .

Meds or conditions where special food and meds are required should have some sort of quick pass and quick check if they fly often .

I still say most people by and large haul all sorts of unecessary crap for a 2 hour flight . If you insist on flying on a regular basis then look at it this way , those who have to drive and sit in long lines of traffic have to suffer and most of this is due to stupid drivers who insist on making their own rules or rubber necking which all makes traffic jambs possible . If people would thig ahead and change lanes in advance since they drive the same route daily then most of the mess could be avoided . Accidents are not accidents they are people not paying attention who have relaxed into driving as if it is a walk in the park and it's not .

People who fly and insist on hauling all sorts of crap need to adjust their thinking and needs , it is not a wagon train across the USA where you will perish and suffer and die without personal survival items and entertainment devices . How spoiled can that possibly be .

You mean to tell me most people can't survive 2 hours without comsumption , if so then think about people who do it everyday on alot less and seem to manage quite well . Saving money , drink before you board and leave the bottles at home if you feel you must drink to enjoy a flight .

Don't people realize how spoiled they are or has this become a born in trait brought through what people call progress . You are still the same working machine of fleash and bone , obviously with alot less gray matter , same thing as people who crossed america on foot or wagon . With basic modern transport you are lucky to get there so fast but no , this is not good enough . got to have this , gotta have that . Seems like mothers spent too much time spoiling . Lets see what the fellow next to me has , I want one too .

I don't really care what people who fly haul along , but realize one thing when I have to fly all of you who are so spoiled look like fools and are a pain in the ass for everyone else who just want to get where they are going . I would never stick my body in someones face reaching over to stuff a bag over their head and then rummage through all sorts of crap rocking the seats so I could play or stuff my face chewing with an open mouth , hand me the barf bag . I sat next to and behind and in front of people like this and trust me you are lucky not to be tossed off the flight . I would rather ride cargo than deal with this none-sense .
