"I love working on the local issues, and I think it is important Texans have someone who will do that in Washington," she said. "Sometimes our senators have gone national on us, and not fought for Texas. One example of that is the sales tax exemption."

Until recently, residents of states with income taxes were able to deduct those from their federal income taxes, while residents from states with sales taxes weren't. But in 2004, Congress made sales taxes deductible, as well - though just for two years.

"I'm working hard to make that permanent," Sen. Hutchison said.

She also pressed for the tax cuts granted in 2001 and 2003.

2. Ah, the meeting with the editorial board.
Too bad that two-bit paper doesn't pay attention to the line between editorial and news. And too bad the reporter was small-time enough to write about it.
