A top expert on the Mideast says it is possible Iran could pick Aug. 22, the anniversary of one of Islam's holiest events, for a cataclysm Shiite Muslims believe will forever resolve the battle between "good" and "evil."

Princeton's Bernard Lewis has written an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal advising that the rest of the world would be wise to bear in mind that for those who believe the end of the world is imminent and good, there is no deterrent even to nuclear warfare.

As WorldNetDaily has reported, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has urged his people to prepare for the coming of an Islamic "messiah," raising concerns a nuclear-armed Islamic Republic could trigger the kind of global conflagration he envisions will set the stage for the end of the world.

He's also said, in a WND report, that Islam and its followers must prepare to rule the world, because it is a "universal ideology that leads the world to justice."

1. This begs the question of how this is any different than
Christian extremists here in the US conspiring to hasten the rapture?

What I find absolutely amazing is that religious extremists are in control of government policies for several nations from all Abrahamic religious traditions and the public refuses to recogize that 2000 lb. pink elephant in the room.

2. Iran doesn't
have any nuclear weapons. This is fearmongering of the worst kind.

Just like the claim that Saddam could launch WMD in 45 minutes.

It's complete bullsh*t but as usual the 30% of the population who share a braincell will lap it up.

11. I'm afraid it's more than 30% sharing a brain cell when it comes...
to believing the fearmongering ghibberish being put out by neocons. That is why Bush and the neocons keep up the terror nonsense as #1, they know the American people will buy it hook, line and sinker.

Iran to Nuke Israel on August 22?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has frustrated Western officials by refusing to reply to their offer of various incentives in exchange for Iran’s discarding its nuclear program until August 22. The Western governments had asked Ahmadinejad to reply by June 29; why would Tehran need two extra months?

Farid Ghadry, the president of the Reform Party of Syria, has offered a provocative explanation for this delay. He asserts that the Supreme National Security Council of Iran chose the August 22 date “for a very precise reason. August 21, 2006 (Rajab 27, 1427) is known in the Islamic calendar as the Night of the Sira’a and Miira’aj, the night Prophet Mohammed (saas) ascended to heaven from the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on a Bourak (Half animal, half man), while a great light lit-up the night sky, and visited Heaven and Hell also Beit al-Saada and Beit al-Shaqaa (House of Happiness and House of Misery) and then descended back to Mecca.…”

The Night Journey, or Miraj, is central to Islam’s claim to Jerusalem as an Islamic holy city. According to Islamic tradition, Muhammad was carried on a Buraq, a miraculous horse with a human head, from Mecca to Jerusalem, where he ascended into heaven and met the other prophets. The only thing the Qur’an has to say about it is this: “Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless, in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who heareth and seeth (all things)” (17:1). There is no identification of the “farthest Mosque” with any mosque in Jerusalem in this, but the Hadith is very clear on the identification of its location with Jerusalem.

The traditions say that Muhammad and the Buraq, along with the angel Gabriel, went to the Temple Mount, and from there to heaven itself, where Muhammad encountered various prophets. In the sixth heaven was Moses, occasioning a dig at the Jews. “When I left him,” Muhammad says, “he wept. Someone asked him, ‘What makes you weep?’ Moses said, ‘I weep because after me there has been sent (Muhammad as a Prophet) a young man, whose followers will enter Paradise in greater numbers than my followers.’”

23. Let's wait and see.
Or is that the point.

We just can't wait, just like we couldn't wait to find Saddam's WMD's that didn't exist, and just like the London Police couldn't wait to shoot the Brazilian guy on the Tube.

I LOVE that guy! He's so awesome. Everytime he opens his mouth he throws the rightwingers in a tailspin. Now I'm left to wonder, whose end of the world is better? Which messiah should I be rooting for? Do I have time to buy popcorn?

14. "Expert" ???? Past-it more like...
Bernard "Look, I belched, and another tired book came forth" Lewis is a pioneer in the field, but his specialty was and remains medieval to pre-modern. His works on the modern period are an embarassment.

He is no expert on the modern period at all. The only ones who view him as such are those who wish for armageddon

22. Actually,
it's highly unlikely that Israel will nuke anybody. And as Iran doesn't have nukes, we can count that out. Even if they did have nukes, I find it difficult to believe they'd use them.

18. Democracy Now did a piece this morning on the other side of the coin
Christians United for Israel: New Christian Zionism Lobby Hopes to Rival AIPAC

short statement for example:

MY GOODMAN:

Max Blumenthal, I wanted to end on the issue of rapture.
Last month, Harper's magazine reported traffic on internet bulletin boards, talking about rapture or end times,
greatly increased following the outbreak of violence in the Middle East.

One person wrote online, "I've been having rapture dreams and I can't believe that this is really it!
We're on the edge of eternity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Another person wrote, "I too am soooo excited!! I get goose bumps,
literally, when I watch what's going on in the !!"

20. I'm starting to look with a very jaundiced eye...
I'm starting to look with a very jaundiced eye at *ANY* claims
made about Islam by Christians and Jews, especially when pub-
lished in such proven bastions of editorial balance and
moderation as the RandO page of the "Wall Street Journal".

And yes, before anyone asks, I certainly experience the same
jaundice when Muslims try to tell us what Jews and Christians
believe.

All three sides in this debate are, basically, full of shit
propagandists.
