Terror case coming apart
Terror case coming apart
Tuesday, August 15, 2006
DEAN BOHN
THE SAGINAW NEWS

Three Texas men of Middle Eastern descent remained jailed this morning on terrorism-related charges in Tuscola County after federal officials said Monday the trio broke no laws and had no links to known terrorist organizations.

Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark E. Reene did not respond to repeated messages from The Saginaw News. A jail guard said the trio -- brothers Adham A. Othman, 21, of Dallas and Louai A. Othman, 23, of Mesquite, Texas, and their cousin, Maruan A. Muhareb, 18, also of Mesquite -- remained behind bars waiting for a Friday pretrial hearing on state charges of collecting material to support terrorist acts and surveillance of a vulnerable target, the Mackinac Bridge, with intent to commit terrorism.

Nabih H. Ayad, a suburban Detroit defense attorney representing the Texas men, said that based on Monday's statements by the FBI, he planned to file an emergency motion today for his clients' release on bond.

He said the photos of the Mackinac Bridge were innocent tourist snapshots taken while the men were stuck in traffic. "That's what people do when you see a tourist attraction: They take pictures," he said...

1. Morans . . . While I've often said that the biggest mistake . . .
Is considering the "War on Terror" to be a war rather than a police matter, I begin to doubt whether the American police community could hold up its end in the international network of law enforcement necessary to foil these plots before they come to fruition.

Not very encouraging. "War" was never going to work and now policing seems beyond our grasp too. When did America become the land where thumb-fingered dolts predominated in public positions?

2. This country is getting more and more absurd
Especially when you have laws like "state charges of collecting material to support terrorist acts and surveillance of a vulnerable target" Under such a loosely defined law, I could be charged, since I tend collect lots of fireworks and lots of other "suspicious" chemicals that I use when working on my old cars. And god forbid if you take a picture of the St. Louis Arch anymore:eyes: Of course I probably don't have much to fear from the authorities, since I am a white, male, native born citizen. Frankly all these laws do is allow police, prosecutors and the federal alphabet agencies hassle anybody for any reason under the rubric of the "law"

I weep for what my country is becoming.

5. it is indeed.
I liked Olberman's take about the history of 'coincidental' threat alerts at opportune moments, and Ridge's assertion that his office was pressured to raise alerts for reasons they themselves couldn't fathom.

This is starting to look like a version of the Miami 7 arrests. Making it up here, so we can fight them over there.

6. Reading the Almanac is considered suspicious by their advice
There is no war on terror, if there was we would be all about protecting our water systems, our food distribution channels, our chemical and nuclear plants - these kids of things. Sorry, don't tell me I'm in imminent danger, run for my life, while you have a seat, relax and pour yourself a beer.
