C-Span right now - Children & The Internet
Lots of Puritan callers crying about the Internet not being safe for thier kids. Sorry if you can't plop them down in front of a computer like an electronic babysitter. None of them are using filters, or if they are, not properly. Take some responsibility, parents.

Family Research Council must be busy mannig the phone banks tonight.

Stay away from our adult porn. No censorship.

1. This is going to another case of "doing something stupid for the children"
Gotta keep the internet rated G for the kiddies:eyes: Of course this will have the "unintended" consequence of shutting down any and all news outlets other than the MSM, including chat rooms like DU and all of the blogs. Can't let those kiddies start questioning what's really going on.

I'm with you, leave the internet alone parents, and instead keep an eye on what your kid is actually doing on the computer.

2. There are many tools available for responsible parents
who choose to be responsible. Don't punish everyone else because you're too lazy to monitor your child's online habits.
Buy them a ball glove and ball, send them outside to play. How about that?

4. Don't cut off free thinking
Having a teenage daughter I am well aware of what dangers the net can pose, but the main threat comes in the form of adults who use the net to get in contact with children.
As much as I would prefer she doesn't come across some sick sites, they can be turned off again. Restricting what sites our kids can find doesn't stop pedifiles getting onto the innocent children's sites in search of vunerable children.

The best form of protection are:
-Keeping a close eye on what our kids are doing
-Spending time with them building a relationship so they feel free to descuss any concerns with you
-And yes encouraging other hobbies and activties which build self esteem.
#But most importantly, teaching them how to think for themselves.#

Nothing will ever be a hundred per cent guarantee that nothing will happen, but:
-restricting our children from accesing the masses of information on the net
-not allowing them to work out for themselves what's really happening in the world
-giving them only the information that the goverment choose to tell them, leaving them far more vunerable to the "powers that may be"
Now that really would be putting them in danger.

3. Did you hear the hearing before the calls?
You just have to love when a Senator talks about how stupid adults are that they can't even program the time on their vcr's and compares that to parents inablility to police their children on the internets.

7. The politicians ALWAYS use the kids for an excuse to do their...
anti freedom crap. They are all shook up over the grass roots movement on the net. Mad because the net proves they lie. SO THEY USE THE KIDS AGAIN!
