FBI Cites No Terror Ties in Arrests

Monday August 14, 2006 7:16 PM

CARO, Mich. (AP) - The FBI said Monday it had no information to indicate
that the three Texas men arrested with about 1,000 cell phones in their
van had any connections to terrorism.

Authorities had increased patrols on Michigan's 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge
after the men were arrested, and local prosecutors charged them with
terrorism-related counts.

But the FBI issued a news release Monday saying there is no imminent threat
to the bridge and no information indicating that the men have any direct link
to terrorism.

3. The FBI clearly is not trying hard enough...
sure, they have no "direct link", but why the hell should that stop them from squirrelling these guys away for years and years? :sarcasm:

I remembered the tag this time.

4. This story helped feed the weekend frenzy & prop up the other
"plot" story. The theatrics of having multiple threats adds to the "world is coming to an end" paranoia & boosts viewership of the cable channels.

6. Just as I suspected...
And yet people scoff at people like myself who dare to question the seriousness or legitimacy of the recent British terror "plot"...

And here's yet another one that's good for a head scratch: On today's DU's list of LBN headlines, the following two headlines appeared very near each other :

Terrorism experts cast doubt on al-Qaeda tie to arrests

and...

Al-Qaida-U.K. Plot Link Evidence Grows

8. Not clear to me why one needs 1000 cell phones to blow up a bridge.
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 03:22 PM by yellowcanine
Seems to me that a couple of dozen at most would do the trick. My guess is that these guys were only guilty of transporting cell phones for resale - if somehow that is a crime now. Even if they were stolen cell phones, that is not terrorism.

9. I have taken pictures of that bridge. Does that make me a terrorist if I
transport some cell phones? Are cell phone salesmen not allowed to take pictures of bridges? Maybe the guy thought it made a nice picture?
