This just seems wrong to me...
A feisty Boy George reports for garbage duty
‘You think you’re better than me?’ yells the singer as he begins service

OK, I will admit I dont know much about Boy George's history other than he sang for Culture Club, but is this really necessary or does he deserve this? I mean that piece of garbage Rush Limbaugh gets off with NOTHING even after he again violated his probation while they make a Boy George, a guy pick up trash after he offered to help out with AIDS benefits or some other charity for his community service...You know, something WORTHWHILE?

I think its extremely telling of the social prejudices in this country...I could be wrong.

1. ... he's had more than his share of run-in's with 'the law' ....
... how many times does one get a slap on the wrist before they get serious about getting into rehab and making it work, and accept the consequences of their actions? The alternative to community service would be time in lockup. I think he got the better end of the deal, actually ...

" ... In June, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Anthony Ferrara issued a warrant for O’Dowd’s arrest after he initially failed to complete the requirements of his plea deal. When O’Dowd appeared in court ten days later, Ferrara called off the warrant but warned the singer he could not escape his community service commitment... "

2. Well, to put things in perspective, BG has to pick up trash, but
Limbaugh is trash. So making Limbaugh stand on the side of the road would technically be littering. Not to mention the Constitution does protect criminals from cruel and unusual punishment, and putting anyone in jail or on a work crew with Rush would be well beyond cruel and unusual punishment for them.

The only fair thing to do with Rush is to flush him down the toilet, where he belongs. But he'd clog up the drain. So I guess they just can't figure out what to do with him.

3. Activist Judge.
I would also like to mumble something about double standards and how ridiculously unbalanced our so-called system of justice is. I just saw a story about how state after state has allowed the worst child sex predator to get off time and time again scott free because he jumps bail. He knows how to work the legal system and the prosecuters actually act like they are afraid to go after the man. I think it was on 48 hours last week, if I am not mistaken. The man had a journal with thousands of coded entries for child molestations he has done. Yet, he's free and a person who needs treatment not jail time is picking up garbage. Some system of justice we have, huh? :eyes:

4. He received preferential treatment.

The police found cocaine in his apartment.

If he had been a black kid from Harlem he would have gone to jail for several years. He should be happy to be picking up garbage for 5 days.

7. He sure did.
He should be happy that was his only punishment.

9. You beat me to it :)
He wouldn't have to be a black kid from Harlem. If he was some suburban kid with no connections, he'd be doing 30 years, as it's not his first offense.

Not that I think this is the right answer either... just saying that's the f@#%ed up mindset we have now, since the war on drugs began.

5. Community service wasn't supposed to be a humiliation
It was supposed to be a making of amends, reconnecting criminals to their community, giving people a sense of worth, fixing wrongs. The fact that it has dissolved into a method of public humiliation, much like the stocks of old, says a lot more about "polite society" than it does about the criminals.

8. Well said
The concept is a failure when it's abused in this fashion.

10. Its a shame anyone recieves "punishment" for personal, victimless actions
so they found coke in his apt - sfw? why is that anyone's business? why do free adults in a free society recieve "punishment" for what they do in the privacy of their own homes alone or with consenting adults? I'll never understand it.
