Ohio #1 in job losses
And the GOP is still touted as the party who improved Ohio's economy. Guess that depends on your definition of improvement...

"After a generation of bleeding jobs from the auto, steel and rubber industries, employment in the manufacturing sector steadied by the early 1990s, then began growing.

In the five-county Akron-Canton area, manufacturers added nearly 9,700 new jobs -- a 7.8 percent increase -- between 1992 and 1998, according to a Beacon Journal analysis of federal data.

Other sectors of the economy also prospered and Ohio's overall unemployment rate ran lower than the national average for eight straight years.

Then the party ended.

Ohio's rejuvenated manufacturers, who had stripped down and learned to compete effectively with Japan, Korea, Germany and Mexico, stumbled before the new challenge from China, with its rock-bottom labor costs.

The effect on traditional industries was catastrophic: One in five manufacturing jobs in Ohio disappeared in the last five years -- more than wiping out all the hard-fought gains of the 1990s.

The 217,000 jobs that vanished from all of Ohio's goods-producing industries between 1997 and last year -- along with their $9.3 billion in average annual wages -- were the biggest losses of any state in the nation. The state's 15.7 percent decline in total average annual wages also ranked Ohio dead last..."

1. Interesting that Michigan's GOP Gov. candidate is saying that Michigan
is losing jobs, while the states around us are gaining jobs.

4. Against China there is no real hope of surviving unless we talk of tariffs
But that would be against World Trade Organization rules that promote free trade.

16. Idiot Babyboomers and tough guy Republican 'Pseudo Christians'
Both of which vote on the STUPIDEST issues (abortion and gay marriage.)

THe former is all throughout the state.

THe latter is mostly in the rural and suburban areas.

Not to mention the raving Catholic 'stop abortion at all costs!' crowd mostly in the north.

21. You nailed it
and failure is a good teacher. Some people have to get hit hard in the pocketbook before they get a clue.

Term limits have also totally screwed up and corrupted state government.

22. I've tried explaining to my father just why his kids aren't making it in
Ohio if the 'economy is doing so well'.

He, as a baby boomer Ohioan, is just not getting it. He doesn't understand why I (out of state) didn't and can't start out on the middle rung like he did with the same education as he had (+ 7 languages). He doesn't understand why his youngest son has to work retail to make ends barely meet. He doesn't understand why his oldest with the Harvard education took so long to get decent work (out of state.)

It's not hitting him in his pocketbook yet as he is nicely invested, but his 4 kids are struggling to stay afloat and that's the sad part. I hope it doesn't have to, but it will.

19. It Seems No One Here Cares About Education, Libraries, the Environment...
What a pity, and BTW we have surpassed Texas as the most polluted state, I believe I read here the other day. Cancer rates are number two, the elections are being stolen right under our noses....but what's the biggest problem?? Gay marriage and abortion.....how about mind your own business people? Why am I still here? I gotta get out of this place....
