Lamont surprised by harshness of attacks
Democratic Senate nominee Ned Lamont, the anti-war candidate who toppled Sen.
Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut primary, says he was surprised by Lieberman and Vice President Dick Cheney's claims that his victory could embolden terrorists.

"My God, here we have a terrorist threat against hearth and home and the very first thing that comes out of their mind is how can we turn this to partisan advantage. I find that offensive," Lamont said in an interview Sunday with The Associated Press.

(snip)
Lamont said Lieberman's swipe at his candidacy "sounded an awful lot" like Cheney.

"It surprised me," he said. "It seemed almost orchestrated. It's sort of demeaning to the people of Connecticut ... I thought the senator and the vice president were both wrong to use that attack (strategy) on the voters of Connecticut."

2. Good response, Ned.
Lieberman must be getting his instructions from the WH to sound so like them.

demeaning to the voters of Connecticut.... I love the memes that just come naturally to him. He is both a bit naive (as to the current political climate), and very, very wise (about the principles of democracy).

5. I think the most important line of attack
needs to focus on attacking the voters of Connecticut. The high turnout for a primary shows that the voters of Connecticut wanted Lieberman out. If the Democrats focus their message on how the Cons and Lieberman are telling the rest of the country that who Connecticut voters chose in the primary was wrong, I think that would be an effective counter-strategy. Makes it seem as if who we vote for doesn't matter.

34. Much more is fine, much being a qualifier.
The less/fewer thing is numbers versus mass; less fat, fewer calories. You wouldn't say fewer fat, although you could say fewer fat molecules. The advertising industry has done much to muddle English grammar.

10. I'm not surprised at all
It's because the neocons and PNACers (which includes Lieberman, IMHO) are scared shitless that they will soon lose their stranglehold on American government. They are getting desperate, folks, and that's what truly worries me. If anyone thinks they're going to give this up without pulling out all the stops, you truly don't understand what's at stake for them -- or us.

well and they are not happy campers, they are less likely to fall for the Neocon nudges again.

15. I just read a quote from Gandhi
That was posted here on DU.

First they ignore you. (antiwar protests before the invasion)
Then they laugh at you. (just after the invasion)
Then they ridicule you.(calling antiwar protesters wingnuts etc, etc)
Then they attack you. (that is what we are seeing today)
Then you win.

Do not change the message. Do not give up your principles. The Iraq war is wrong. It was wrong to invade then and it is wrong to occupy it now. Waging a war based on flimsy lies and innuendo is the worst thing an administration can do to itself and the nation it serves. Does not matter which nation. It is wrong. We all know this - instinctively.

He's exactly right, but I would have preferred he said that he wasn't surprised considering this is what the Bush GOP has done since McCain and have done it on a near monthly basis to somebody ever since.

Otherwise, good response and I hope he really hammers this one home.

victory by voting for him, for crying out loud. Does this mean by inference that Connecticut voters support al Qaida? Ridiculous, isn't it?

24. "It's ... demeaning to the people of Connecticut"
This is the point that needs to be driven home, and he needs to loose the qualifiers. He needs to run ads showing Lieberman's statements, and reminding people Lieberman/Cheney are making the argument that people who are anti-Iraq War are terrorist appeasers. Lieberman/Cheney are trying to make this about the leaders of the anti-Iraq War movement, if we can push the focus of their attack to the anti-Iraq War voter, Lieberman won't be within 20 points of Lamont in a month.

32. Someone has given Lamont some excellent framing and media training.
He has come so far in the last few months, it's amazing. This framing of Cheney's and Lieberman's remarks as an affront and insult to the voters of Connecticut is brilliant. He keeps his own ego out of it, and rearranges the argument where Lieberman and Cheney are now on the defensive to explain why they think the voters of Connecticut are terrorist-appeasers.

Good job, Ned!
