Not Scared Anymore: "Terra" is the new normal.
There's been a lot of chat on here about how the No-Hairgel-On-Planes incident may or may not have been cooked up, or at the very least, maniuplated, in order to continue scaring the American people. But, folks, the one thing that I have noticed is that if you ignore the drumbeat of the cable news nets (which nobody watches anyway) and go out and talk to regular folks, here's the deal: NOBODY OUT THERE IS SCARED.

I was IN Manhattan at the office this week. On Thursday, there in New York, life went on pretty much as usual. The incident rated about 5 minutes of watercooler chat at work, and then everyone went off to a meeting. I flew home on Friday. LaGuardia was a big snoozefest. No lines, no difficulty getting anywhere. I had a couple of curbside conversations with fellow travellers. They were calm, collected, cracking jokes about the Toothpaste Bombers. The flight home? Big yawn. Nothing happened.

Here's my point -- if this WERE yet another attempt to stir the pot -- it FAILED MISERABLY. Almost everyone I talked to over the last few days was NOT SCARED. I honestly think this sort of thing, sadly, is becoming the new normal. People are used to it now, and it's not going to have any effect on us.

I dunno, just my two cents. I'd be interested in hearing other people's takes -- reactions not from teevee, or the internets, but from REAL LIFE.

1. Did I ever tell you that you are my Fav?
Terror, gay marriage, illegal aliens, and media manipulation is all they have left
in their playbook. Along with election fraud and crime .... and those the repugs
are working on 24/7 ..... count on it.

The only thing we have to fear is fear it's self. FDR

<NBC: U.S. Rushed Brits to Bust Terror Plot, Says Source
By Justin Rood - August 12, 2006, 6:17 PM

NBC News has learned that U.S. and British authorities had a significant disagreement over when to move in on the suspects in the alleged plot to bring down trans-Atlantic airliners bound for the United States.

A senior British official knowledgeable about the case said British police were planning to continue to run surveillance for at least another week to try to obtain more evidence, while American officials pressured them to arrest the suspects sooner. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

In contrast to previous reports, the official suggested an attack was not imminent, saying the suspects had not yet purchased any airline tickets. In fact, some did not even have passports.>

So we hurt a real terror investigation and "In contrast to previous reports, the official suggested an attack was not imminent, saying the suspects had not yet purchased any airline tickets. In fact, some did not even have passports."

2. That 's been my impression, too.
The only reaction I've noticed so far is exasperation with the new TSA rules. My brother flew out of BWI on Thursday, right after they announced it, and he said it wasn't even that big of a deal. At work, hardly anybody was talking about the "plot," just griping about not having your toothpaste in your carry-on. And I work for an airline.
