Thousands March In SF Anti-War Rally; Police Called To Seperate Groups
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=local&id=4456477Aug. 12 - KGO - In San Francisco pro-Israeli and pro-Lebanese supporters squared off with separate rallies at Civic Center Plaza. The situation considered so volatile, dozens of uniformed police officers formed long lines, facing each group to keep them physically apart.
The rhetoric was anything but peaceful as two opposing groups squared off in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza.
Pro-Israeli supporters on one side, supporters of Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq on the other clearly separated by a wide street and two rows of police riot gear at the ready.
Lisa Cohen, Israel supporter: "They defend killers, and terrorists, and they lie. And we're here defending democracy."
Ali Bakhshandeh, Lebanon supporter: "American media is creating a fake enemy for America, at the same time creating fake friends for America."
And as one group left the plaza for a march through downtown San Francisco, a negotiated cease fire in Lebanon seemed not to impress everyone here.
