So. Britain wanted to continue surveillance but Uncle Sam needed CODE RED!
Edited on Sun Aug-13-06 12:59 AM by Bluebear
LONDON - NBC News has learned that U.S. and British authorities had a significant disagreement over when to move in on the suspects in the alleged plot to bring down trans-Atlantic airliners bound for the United States.

A senior British official knowledgeable about the case said British police were planning to continue to run surveillance for at least another week to try to obtain more evidence, while American officials pressured them to arrest the suspects sooner. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

In contrast to previous reports, the official suggested an attack was not imminent, saying the suspects had not yet purchased any airline tickets. In fact, some did not even have passports.

The source did say, however, that police believe one U.K.-based suspect was ready to conduct a "dry run." British authorities had wanted to let him go forward with part of the plan, but the Americans balked.

3. Who are the trying to kid? They know god damn well there isn't any
threat, they don't even pretend to be cautious. It's just, "the books says throw it in here, so throw it in here". If this weren't so pathetically insane it might be funny.

4. Just because we're progressives doesn't make it true!
The Gatorade containers were just for HOLDING the explosives! :eyes:

Fine, good police work interrupted a plot that might have been dangerous but certainly not imminent. Meanwhile the traveling world is put into hysteria.

5. Holding what explosives? After 3 days NOTHING about
any explosives. Think that after all this hoopla, if they actually had something they wouldn't have paraded it across & up & down downing street?

8. The Gatorade thing...
...referenced MANY threads of Thursday last saying DU 'looked bad' for even doubting the story, that the Gatorade bottles could have held this and that and that disaster was imminent.

Another WMD story, it turns out.

10. I know what you are saying.
I wish that DU WOULD look bad once in a while about calling these deals bullshit, but in all the time I've been around it hasn't happened. Unfortunately, the real ones seem to blind sight everybody & bypass critical DU inspection.

Is ooof! one of those official Batman fight scene noises, because that's what I was going for. You have an acerbic wit and a prety good memory, and you're an iconoclast to boot. Thanks for the reference, for the laugh, and for the many times you've made me laugh in the past.

to pay for it would be. No need to wonder anymore.

11. Britain still has an evidence-based legal system
and likely all these british citizens will walk out of this arrest free of any charges,
with the only real cost of this stupid non-event being the labour party and its
dictator who has moved in to crime-without-evidence along with bush and the
other fantasists.

Likely all those named by the bank of england will win compensation from this from
the government for insulting their good names without any substantial legal basis.

13. One thing that bothers me is
that Britain was "persuaded" to go ahead with the bust. I thought they were a sovereign country :sarcasm: . If there were any doubts who is calling the shots in their country, this should quell them.

Blair is on 23% approval, even his own party doesn't like him, but he just won't go.

18. This is close to what a lot of us suspected
The attack was possible but it was far from actually being implemented. (It was probably one of many that were and are being investigated.) The crooks at the White House saw a chance to stem the momentum of the Democrats before the election (especially after the Lieberman loss) and declared Code Red, scaring the crap out of the voters and inconveniencing a lot of travelers.

Is Will Pitt around? Some of us were trying to tell him that this was the case. We were not saying that it couldn't happen or that there might not be folks out there trying to plan something, but that this, like many other operations, would probably have been stopped in the planning stages and all of us would have been spared the drama and could bring coffee on board without a second thought. We might never have known about it if it didn't suit the White House's timing.

Now, everytime we go to the airport and are forced to chuck our liquids before travel, we become involved in a ritual which is really an interactive campaign commercial for the Bush administration.
