Thousands Rally for Lebanon Near White House

By Petula Dvorak
Washington Post Staff Writer

A few thousand people, many waving the red, white and green flag of Lebanon, gathered in Lafayette Park this afternoon to show their support for the country at the center of the war between Israel and Hezbollah.

The demonstration, which comes as the Lebanese and Israeli cabinets are poised to vote on a U.N. Security resolution calling for an end to fighting in the month-old conflict, drew participants from across town, across the river and across the country.

Police removed a small group of counter protesters, who did not have a permit but claimed a spot in front of the White House, after they had several heated exchanges with the demonstrators. "It was for safety reasons," said Kristinn Taylor, who organized the small group to oppose the rally that he called "pro-terrorists <--snip

17. Supporting Lebanon who is a new democratic country from the
carnage of one group within its borders and another country is something most people should support. Lebanon (a beautiful country with good people) is being destroyed in this battle.

26. That may not be so far off
I went to a cease-fire rally in Detroit. (a few photos here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=280x18429) It's probably a lot of the same people as are in DC this weekend - I know we sent 5 bus loads there.

There were a stack of homemade signs for people to grab, and a few of them were pro-Hezbollah specifically. I saw a woman quietly folding those up and putting them in the trash. When the speakers were speaking after the march, each time Hezbollah was mentioned, a big cheer went up and several hundred people waved their flags enthusiastically.

The US, Canada, and Israel list Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. The UN acknowledges it "employs terrorist tactics" but at the same time says it's not helpful to label it "a terrorist organization" and says the US and international world should respect it as a legitimate political party. They operate hospitals, clinics, schools, agricultural centers. They're pretty heavily involved in social development. They also promote women's rights. It's not a black and white issue, though the media here naturally portrays it as such.

Dueling Middle East war protests in San Francisco
John Cote And Carolyn Jones, Chronicle Staff Writers

Saturday, August 12, 2006

(08-12) 12:59 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- In a civil-but-spirited pair of Middle East protests Saturday, hundreds of pro- and anti-Israel demonstrators rallied side by side at the Civic Center, separated by metal barricades and dozens of police officers.

The protesters noisily chanted against or in favor of Israel's military actions in Lebanon and Palestinian territories. The protesters calling for a stop to U.S. aid to Israel planned to march from the Civic Center down Market Street and back up Mission, blocking the busy Fifth and Market streets shopping corridor.

At noon, there had been no arrests but several minor skirmishes.

"I've been a pacifist all my life. I think that war is the enemy of everyone and solves nothing," said Eleanor Ohman, 87, of San Francisco, explaining what drew her to protest. "What I hope, but what I don't think will happen, is that everyone around the world will be friends."

20. See that freepers? This is what a real protest looks like.
Your little pro-war "support the troops" rallies might be fun for a few minutes... but maybe only 12 people show up.
