Besides, three more bodies were discovered on Saturday -- one in Baghdad and two in Kifil in Hillah province south of the capital.
Police made the gruesome discovery of the 12 corpses in Suwayrah, 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Baghdad, at one of the metal grills fixed in the river to block weeds and plants from floating downstream. snip
Police said it is unlikely that all 12 men found in Suwayrah were killed together.
The victims were aged between 35 and 45 years, and most of them were shot in the head and the rest in the chest, said Mamoun al-Rubaie, an official at the morgue in Kut where the bodies were bought.
Most of them showed signs of torture, said al-Rubaie.
