The bombing plot uncovered by British intelligence presents an excellent opportunity to write letters to local newspapers demanding that
we elect representatives in November who can bring a new focus
to deterring terrorism. Find out the word limit for your local paper before you write!
This article in the Raleigh News & Observer today is what motivated me to write my letter.

As the article “Analysts: US could learn from Britain” (N&O 8/12/06 page 16A) indicates, Britain’s domestic intelligence-gathering system gathered the data which led to the revelation of the plot to bomb flights from London to the U.S.
The Bush Administration has its priorities, and budget, in the wrong place fighting terrorism. In the 13 minutes it took to write this letter, the U.S. spent $3.72 million on the Iraq War, out of a total $306.2 billion spent since its inception.* Discussion has gone on since before 9/11, about the lack of “a cohesive domestic intelligence collection agency as a key weakness” in American homeland security. While we are spending billions in Iraq, creating more terrorists, the Bush Administration is fighting terrorism at home by taking away shampoo and suntan lotion from teenagers returning from camp.
The Bush Administration doesn’t get it, any more than they did when they took away FEMA’s responsibility to prepare for national disasters, such as the one we experienced from Hurricane Katrina. In November, we, the people, must elect representatives who understand that government does have a purpose, and that our money must be effectively spent on a wise policy to deter terrorism.
