1. Bush getting a bounce from "terrorism" isn't an issue.
The issue is how long it lasts. That's really all we need to be concerned with.

We know his numbers are going to tank again. We should be looking at the duration of the bounces in anticipation of 2008.

3. And we know that most people aren't paying attention.
If they do happen to catch the news, they only get the story du jour. Everything else is moved to the back burner. Just as Iraq replaced Afghanistan, the crisis in Lebanon has pushed Iraq off the front page. Just now all we're hearing about is the foiled terrorist plot in London. And most people believe that the US was responsible for stopping it.

And it'll just be a matter of time before they need another distraction and we'll be hearing more about gay marriage or flag burning or the superstitious significance of the numbers in the current date. Katrina? What was that?! And if things get really, really bad (as if they haven't already) they'll find yet another fizzy soda can in the subway... *sigh* x(

15. I hope they don't "create" a situation so they can stay in power. I
habe become so cynical that I think that they would do ansolutely anything to stay in power and am beginning to give conspiracy theorists a second glance now.

6. he's still below 40% after a major Terra, Terra, Whoot, Whoot
Edited on Sat Aug-12-06 11:14 AM by MissWaverly
If this had been in 2003, he had have jumped to 47% by now. This is an encouraging sign,
the kool aid is wearing off, people are not better off, and they are not going to confuse
a warm, fuzzy Bush moment with a vitory in Iraq.

7. On the plus side Dems have to attack and neutralize just this one issue
while GOP has endless issues. The danger is of course that if they successfully maintain fear, it can overpower everything; yet even that usually affects presidential elections much more than congressional ones. But here comes Patriot Act III, IV, XV and lots of pressure on the Dems on wiretapping and profiling. Going to be ugly.

8. fear is not going to topple disgust over Iraq
Edited on Sat Aug-12-06 11:35 AM by MissWaverly
The average American knows that this is Bush's war, he started it, and we are getting our
butt kicked over there, that is obivious to the average Joe and to the rest of the world.
And the Israeli offensive in Lebanon was a total fiasco.

Iraq and the general ME policy we are less safe and more people hate us. It's a simple enough message but it needs to be repeated ad nauseum. My worry is that Bush will still have an upper hand on wiretapping, secrecy and torture. That's the ugly part.

13. I am hoping that the court case on wiretapping succeeds
I still don't know how they were able to combine 27 cases accross the country into 1 case.
I sure hope that it doesn't get moved to the FISA court.

9. I just don't see
what people are so afraid of. 9-11 occured because Bush didn't see the warnings as a credible threat, the apparatus was in place, we didn't need anymore departments, acts or such. Just for the CIA and FBI to do a better job at what they're getting paid to. That is, of course, they LIHOP!

10. Margin of error in May poll = 4%. Not reported in this poll
(or else, I couldn't find it). My guess is it is about the same. I noticed also that the May poll story did not include the disapproval %. From what's reported in the two stories (and my reading between the lines of what is left out), his ratings are unchanged.
