I wanna know what happened to the stuff that airline passengers dumped
presumably this would qualify as hazardous material, wouldn't it?
Who will go through all of it to see if there really were explosives in passenger's bags?
shouldn't the stuff be carefully removed to a safe, isolated place -- treated like a potential bomb?
What really happened to the stuff....I'll be willing to bet that the vast majority of it, if not all of it, was tossed into dumpsters...probaby on the airport grounds...

2. I saw them piling it into dumpsters, but where will those dumpsters end up
I suspect that TSA agents will be smelling pretty good, have clearer skin and squeeky clean hair :)

4. I'm guessing they threw it away.
Assuming that one of the zillion objects they confiscated was a bomb, it's probably safer in a landfill than on the airplane.

5. There is one company that gets all of the unclaimed/permanently
Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 05:08 PM by greyhound1966
lost luggage from the airlines and then sells it. I'll try to find some net-info on it. I imagine if it's consumable it ends up there.

Here it is;

Personally I think this is just wrong. For example, one item found in a suitcase was a 41 caret emerald! Don't you think someone wanted that back? Of course our corporatocracy has limited the airlines to $50 (which won't even replace the bag, let alone the contents) in liability so why should they care whether they get their stuff back?

10. Wouldn't that have delayed air traffic for hours or even days?
Quite a few people fly every day. To record every discarded bottle of Gatorade would be a logistical nightmare. But throwing it away takes the biggest dent out of safety concerns without jamming up the whole process. IMO, anyway.

13. i was just carrying out their reasoning and being slightly facetious
supposing person "x" had all the ingredients to make his or her bomb, but dumped them. they would get on the plane and have a second chance.

they want to get rid of suspected substances w/out nabbing 'suspects'.

9. Bet some airport workers might scarf some of the unopened
sealed stuff. I got some great bargains on a couple of pen knives and Toollogic cards off EBay that were TSA confiscates.

12. I don't know about liquids, but much of it is sold on ebay.
I ran across some auctions for boxes of scissors, nail clippers, etc that said they were confiscated at airports. Californiagold2000 sells lots of surplus govt stuff, including from airports.

15. This story says it's being dumped - though Phoenix wants to donate
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/T/TERROR_PLOT_DISCARDED_ITEMS?SITE=PAGRE&SECTION=US&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Loads of liquid goods discarded by airline passengers at security checkpoints will end up in the trash, not in the pockets of airport employees or others, officials at airports across the country promised Friday.

No exceptions - not even for cases of Napa Valley wine.

"We had people throw away a whole case of wine, or try to drink their wine in line," said San Francisco's International Airport duty manager Lily Wang.

<snip>

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport planned to give 11 boxes of surrendered items to the city's human services department, which will give the unopened bottles of shampoo, toothpaste and other items to homeless shelters, airport spokeswoman Lexie Van Haren said.

<snip>

In Pennsylvania, state officials were considering pulling some discarded items for a state program that resells on eBay any items of value relinquished at airport security checkpoints, said Edward Myslewicz, spokesman for the General Services Department. However, officials at the state's main airports in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh said they were discarding all the liquids and gels.
