Israel says plan is 'good'; Security Council to vote Friday
Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 01:25 PM by cal04
Israel TV quoted Israeli officials as saying the new cease-fire proposal was “good,” and an Israeli source said there was a “good chance” Israel would accept it.

A French diplomat said the U.N. Security Council vote would go ahead whatever the response from Israel and Lebanon. The vote was to be held at 3 p.m. ET, according to the British foreign secretary.

Shortly after Israel began its wider offensive, a source close to the Israeli government said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to ask him if there was any room left for diplomacy.

Olmert indicated he’d be willing to call off the offensive if Israel’s basic demands are met, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the private conversation.
