WOW! Who said THIS?
"Never has so much military and economic and diplomatic power been used so ineffectively, and if after all of this time, and all of this sacrifice, and all of this support, there is still no end in sight, then I say the time has come for the American people to turn to new leadership not tied to the mistakes and policies of the past."

14. Yes.
Nixon got away with this statement at the time because he could blame LBJ's administration.

18. "Elect me and I'll stop the Vietnam War" worked so well in 1968...
...that he used it again in 1972.

21. Actually, Daniel Ellsberg went public with it
It was basically to threaten the use of nuclear weapons. He did have Henry Kissinger make the threat at the Paris peace negotiations (later confirmed by Vietnamese ambassador Le Duc Tho), but the growing anti-war movement deterred him from acting before the election and afterward he became preoccupied with that little Watergate thing.

13. 1968 presidential campaign
Democratic candidate was Hubert Humphrey, LBJ's VP who was tainted with the Johnson administration's escalation of the Vietnam War.

Thanks for sharing. I can just hear the Republicans screaming if the Dems dared to air a message like Nixon's with pictures of the carnage in Iraq.

would look good in comparison to the vile thugs that rule over us now? He was wrong, he was an asshole of monumental proportions, he was a petty, vindictive crook, but he genuinely believed he was serving the American People and wanted what was best for them.

I've been in a state of shock since 1980.
