UN evacuates hundreds of troops, civilians from Lebanon town
RASHAYA, Lebanon, Aug 11, 2006 (AFP)
UN peacekeepers were on Friday evacuating hundreds of Lebanese security forces and civilians from a southern town caught in the crossfire of Israel's ground onslaught against Hezbollah.
Some 350 members of a joint police and army security force, whose barracks has been occupied by Israeli troops, and more than 500 civilian cars formed a massive convoy that was led out of the southern Christian town of Marjayun, police said.
Their departure from Marjayun, the focus on Thursday of a major incursion into the eastern sector of southern Lebanon, had been held up for several hours by doubts over the condition of the heavily bombarded road north, police said.
The UN force said Israeli troops were also pressing farther forward towards the Shiite stronghold of Khiam to the southwest, which they had started to surround in a pincer movement from different sides the day earlier.
