Why? OMG -- the only thing that has gotten me through waits at gates and long flights is a good book.

In between that, no food or water on the plane, and UNWRAPPED tampons I am so not flying anyplace for vacation. We were talking Mexico in October and Seattle next June. Guess Florida and someplace else will have to do... *sigh*

1. you realize this is for commercial planes only.
Private jets' passengers can still do all those things. I have friends who fly in a corporate jet a lot and they say that their luggage isn't even inspected. Sure, they go from one dinky airport to another, but still.....

> You do realize how stupid your statement is?

The statement wasn't at all stupid.

The author of .1 was pointing out, in a rather clever way,
that the people that *MAKE UP* these stupid rules will *NEVER*
be affected by them.

Only we, "the little people" will feel the effects.

The big people are travelling in their time-shared Gulfstreams,
far away from our crying babies, bored toddlers, and body odor.

at least you could retreat into the book and try to shut out the cacophony, hassle and dehumanization that is modern air travel.

Not being able to read a book pretty much makes it impossible to travel, IMO.

4. I am SO happy I flew home from reunion 1 day BEFORE all this
Flew from Oakland to LA to Orlando on Wednesday with a leftover 20-oz soda in my checked luggage and carrying a folder with about 120 pages of manuscript I was copy editing and a copy of Wired magazine. I also had a shoulder bag with all kinds of munchies, a digital camera, & other odds & ends that wouldn't fit in my suitcases. Editing manuscripts has been a great way to pass the time on the few long flights I've taken in the past couple of years--the movies that were offered sucked majorly (Mission Impossible III on the way out, Beyond the Hedge on the way back) and the in-flight magazines are nothing but disguised advertising for overpriced tourist traps. It used to be that they would have a huge selection of magazines and newspapers on a plane but I haven't seen that for years. I will NOT be flying again until they loosen these ridiculous, useless restrictions.

Maybe it's the airlines, as they can make things more stringent than the TSA?

That's so bad. Why are books banned? Surely they could look through them or something.

Someone on DU yesterday referred to this, but I watched my local news in which they laboriously went through everything that you now can't take, dramatically holding up bottles of hair conditioner & so forth. They made no mention of reading material. I just googled and found nothing. Do you have a link to point me to?

he was reading the WRONG book. If he's been reading "The Faith of George Bush" he'd probably have been allowed on the plane without having to go through security. :D

Actually, this sounds like the kind of thing that the TSA inspectniks can't figure out, so some do one thing and some another. Off hand, I'd bet that they get little or no guidance on this matter.

My mother lived in an occupied country during Hitler's rise to power; she used to tell me how the Germans had the "right" to enter anyone's home & take anything they wanted whenever they wanted. I was thinking about this last night as I tried to get to sleep. And then I had visions of those concentration camp photos where everyone's stuff was piled up, like piles of suitcases, piles of jewelry, piles of clothing...

How long before we get to that point?

If it does they would have to shut down all the retail shops in all the airports. I don't think the liquid ban will last either. They make too much money from booze and cigarettes in the shops.

Also, think about the box cutters.........so they banned them after 9/11........but they never banned you going to the duty free shop and buying a big GLASS bottle of booze that could be broken and held to someone's throat on board a plane. Surely they thought of that at the time, but they never banned booze did they?

Do you have a link?

I mean - how can a book be used for anything other than reading or toilet paper?

I "get" the iPods and cell phones and car-door openers because they can, theorhetically, be used as an electronic pulse to activate a bomb - but a BOOK?

Can't the stupid screeners flip through and/or X-ray the damn thing to make sure it's not hollowed out and holding a weapon?

This seems silly.

I hope Americans are waking up to exactly how much the Republicans are using FEAR to take their rights away.

46. This is an initial reaction
All initial reactions are overkill and illogical to an event like this.

Once things calm down, the system will balance out again. There will definitely more restrictions, but they will not be as drastic as this.

Just like shutting down the entire Air Traffic system on 9/11. A initial draconian reaction that was lifted after the situation was understood and adapted.

What else would you suggest as an initial reaction to a fast moving situation such as this? They had to keep people moving through the system but need to provide for their safety in the air. How else should they have reacted?

That may be the future of flying. Like getting on a Tokyo suburban commuter train and standing packed in, staring at the wall, for hours.

I was bitching about electronics yesterday, but said, well, at least I can bring a good book. Is it possible the Bushies all went short on airline stocks? They'll be rolling in dough if they did. I have to travel a lot on business, but I will definitely do what I can to dodge travel until some sanity returns.

Now, my husband happens to be brilliant (intelligence is the greatest aphrodisiac) so I cannot say if that will be the average person's reaction but I can say he isn't involved in politics at all so perhaps people are waking up.
