Where's Gibson's free speech?

What happened to freedom of speech? Mel Gibson is entitled to his personal thoughts and feelings. He is entitled to his likes and dislikes. Contrary to the belief of a lot of people in today's society, the Declaration of Independence also entitles him to freedom of speech. Only in a perfect world will we love and respect everyone around us.

I fully support Mel Gibson and I will continue to support his career. All Americans should support him; let's show the rest of the world that in spite of our differences, we still live in a democratic society. Let's start fighting for something our ancestors fought for years ago: our freedom to speak out.

7. I guess that freedom of speech

to me always represented the right of individual citizens to speak out against a repressive government. Nobody has ever cared a whole lot about one person voicing a negative opinion against another. Hate speech, which whips up a frenzy in others, and results in harm to others, is different.

I have every right to tell my next door neighbor that she is fat, and that I don't like the way she has her yard landscaped. The full weight of the government is not going to fall on me for that. If I try to incite other people to attack someone else, it's different.

Speaking out against the government is something else again, and that's why the First Amendment is so important. The very ones we speak out against, if they are part of the government, are the ones who have the power to strip away our liberties. Mel Gibson is a bigoted jerk, but that's not yet a crime. For some of us to boycott his movies because of that, though, is also a right we have. We can exercise that right.
