My gut says this was all about keeping an idea from engulfing the nation.

The idea - that the war on Iraq, at least, was a sham, and that the leadership that brought us that - bush and his gang in the US and blair and his gang in the UK, need to be fired. That accountability needs at last to make its entrance.

I say the war in Iraq, "at least," because I think when the whole ball of yarn starts to be unraveled, we're going to find even deeper, more heinous and treasonous crimes.

Either way, I think the warmongers were shocked in the extreme to see what message won out in CT. To see the level of distrust and disdain for them and their acts. That idea, of accountability, was/is on the verge of sweeping a nation, and too much would be threatened by that. They had to stop it. Their asses are on the line. It had to be stopped in its tracks.

Suddenly, through fear, that message, that idea, has taken a backseat, if not been weakened, if only temporarily. We're back to, "well, if we're safe over here, maybe we should think about keeping our protectors."

It comes down to, if the fear can be maintained, now that attention has been shifted, "who do you trust to keep you safe, Democrats? Will you bet your life, your family's lives on it?"

Whether the plot was real of fabricated, the spin is all about killing the idea of accountability, an idea that showed signs of breaking out, yesterday at least.

5. I'm with you in despair...but...

I'm also willing to give this a "wait & see" for a couple of days. I still believe that if Americans are inconvenienced enough, they will get pissed off & will react. Most especially, I believe that the business community will simply not put up with this crap. And they're the ones we really want to attract...they're probably more likely to be moderates with brains who understand how much of a failure this administration is. So we need to wait & see... If these latest security measures aren't relaxed in a few days or if they impose stricter measures (like in the UK - no laptops, no cell phones, etc.), it will affect the airline industry. That will piss off the business community, including an already weakened airline industry. And they'll get pissed & work their lobbyists.

We just need to continue to show how badly this admin/regime has failed & how we have solutions.

The regular news about how they screw everything up will put things back to rights. I have faith that The People won't have the wool pulled over their eyes any longer (at some point, anyway).

All we have to do is point out:
1) We're fighting "them" in Iraq, and yet there are still terrorist planning to attack us, and
2) The UK captured them, not us (Blair is probably telling them "And the US helped" so he can help his foul-mannered buddy)
3) When a cell is busted, there are more that we don't know about, and
4) The $300 billion in Iraq and our military would be better off actually fighting terrorists and not insurgents.

I will assume that the terrorist threat is real. Given that, the question is what kind of a country do we want to become, given that reality.

It is lily-livered chickenshit to turn our backs on what American is supposed to be -- at least in an ideal sense -- in order to accomodate our fear.
