1. Other--positions on important issues.
Our candidates are packaged and marketed to us, like any other product we buy via the media. I'll research my candidates just like I research my purchases, and make my decisions based on their records, stated positions, information gleaned from other interested parties, etc. If I expect my politican to represent me, I'd best pick one whose thinking resembles my own.

3. No "R" after his or her name
Although, to be honest, I am voting for a Republican here in Chicago, just to punish Todd Stroger and his nitwit father. If you know about this case, you know why I am doing it. I hate crooks of either persuasion. I only voted for Carole Mosley Braun because her opponent was so awful. I almost just left that one blank.

7. Follow the Money!

I look to see how they intend to fund the public treasury - and how they intend to use the money.

I look to see how they made and how they use their personal fortune.

This rather simple analysis tells me just about everything I need to know about their priorities, their loyalties, their morality, etc.

edit for spelling

Just once I'd like to vote for a candidate who could breath underwater.
