Karl Rove, the president’s chief political adviser, says he did make a telephone call to Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut on Tuesday, but he was not offering help for Lieberman’s campaign as an independent.

“I called him. He's a personal friend, and I called him," Rove said today aboard Air Force One en route to Green Bay, Wis., where the president is campaigning for a Republican candidate for Congress. “I called him… Tuesday afternoon, 5 o'clock thereabout, and wished him well in his election that night,.’’


“It was a personal call,’’ Rove said. “Look, (Senate Democratic Leader) Harry Reid's been at my house for dinner. So I actually do have friendships on the other side of the aisle." He denied as “completely inaccurate’’ reports that he had told Lieberman he is interested in helping him run as an independent after losing the Democratic primary.
