The Republican Party has a new voter registration project in Fresno. It involves luring people to sign a LEGALIZE MARIJUANA petition and then re-registering them as Republicans.

4. First time I heard of them doing this I thought WTF? How can that

help them?

Then I realized it can 1) screw up primary votes, if you're registered to the wrong party. 2) provide cover for vote theft in the general election - "see, the votes are in line with the recent surge in Republican registration".

Any other ways I've not thought of?

6. Was going into a grocery store after work Tuesday, and a couple

outside approached the person just in front of me ... asking if a registered voter ...

Since I was from a different county, I didn't listen and went inside ...

I did keep an eye out for the person who did talk to them, and actually, she ended up in the checkout line behind me.

I told her that she should make sure that what they were talking about was what she might end up signing for. She told me, in essence, "Oh, I don't think they are doing that." in a kind of peeved tone.

She did agree with me that there are plenty of people who will be doing one thing while saying another (about petitions) ...

8. This whole business of having to register

as a republican or democratic voter utterly stinks.

There is no good reason for it. It's no-one's business
but your own who you are going to vote for.

In Australia we all register as VOTERS.
To have to register as a particular type of voter
would be considered a gross invasion of privacy.

Even your own lifelong partner here has know way to
know who you vote for unless you choose to tell them.

That's what a secret ballot is all about.
And that makes it so much harder for a government to
interfere with the voting process.

I mean, you can vote for anyone, regardless of party lines. One way it's useful is in the execution of primaries, as it ensures (in those states that don't have open primaries) that only members of a specific party have the opportunity to select the candidates for that party.
