Forgive my ignorance of terrorist's ways, but...
I'm trying to wade through all of this bullshit. Fortunately I didn't turn on the T.V. or radio this morning, so I missed all the brouhaha. Exactly how were these alleged terrorists going to bring down airplanes with liquid explosives. Were they supposedly going to blow the plane apart, and if so, is that possible?

11. How? You can't light anything on a plane anyway...
That's why I call this alert total BS

26. Not true
Matches are legal and anyone can get a lighter on board. They just forbid them. And some chemical combos don't need fire; they blow up all by themselves.

5. That's what I'm wondering...
can they pack enough liquid explosives in a shampoo bottle to blow a plane apart?

3. I caught a fair amount of the press conferences
and they didn't exactly say but they did imply that it components would be assembled on the plane while in the air - explosive substance (liquid or gel), detonator and possibly a timing device. They focused on battery operated devices like cell phones as being part of the detonator.

23. Rcih. Clarke said this A.m. that the Bojinka plot in 10/95 consisted
of a contact lense solution bottle (presumably filled with something ELSE, unless it was MoistureLoc, in which case I guess all passengers would contract an eye infection) & a watch (timer)placed in teh ceiling tile of the airplane bathroom.

Which begs the question: Why hasn't homeland Sec. banned liquids from carryons ALREADY?

6. 21 arrested - they were going to blow up 10 airplanes
I am watching Faux Snooze. Some 'expert' just said liqiod explosives blew up that Korean airliner in the Baltic Sea in the 80s. Which is funny, cause I thought our military shot that one down?

9. Okay, next dumb question...
why didn't Al Quaeda use liquid explosives the last time, instead of, or in addition to boxcutters?

19. I'm guessing here, but the lowest tech approach always has
the lowest probability of a technical glitch.

I'm guessing that at least one of the components for a liquid bomd is either difficult to get or make or it is difficult or risky to move to where it is needed.

8. Of course it's possible, didn't you see Die Hard With a Vengece?
That bubble gum syrup looking stuff is NASTY!

I'm still waiting on some actual details before I decide on this one. I've learned not to trust Bush (even before he became president), but I'm also leary of the DU crowd who would call bullshit if Bush said the Earth was relatively round. They are right more often than Bush, but I'd still like to see the evidence before I debunk the evidence. I can imagine liquid explosives doing damage to a plane, I can imagine that a terrorist with the Internet and nothing better to do can figure out just where to place a bomb on a plane for maximum damage, I can imagine people hating America and England enough to want to kill a bunch of us (I have trouble imagining there are people who don't hate us now), and we all know that UBL and al-Qeada have been a threat longer than Bush has been around, as Clinton tried to tell them in the 90s (Yes he did, you pathetic, lying, ignorant little lurkers who might be reading this). It's all possible.

As soon as they produce the evidence, I'll congratulate the Brits on this.

16. I will never turn on Fox News. But, just because the media and the gov
sound like idiots doesn't mean that the investigators didn't know what they were doing. Media critters and politicians always try to sound like they know more than they do, and they always sound dumb.

But you may be right. I've just read the online stories, which are vague, and the DU "THIS IS BULLSHIT!" stories which rely on the "no way!" method of debunking. Still waiting on a reasonably complete presentation so I can decide on the evidence. It may be already be out there, I just haven't seen it yet.

15. I heard on NPR that a similar attack was carried out before
explosives were hidden in a contact lens solution bottle. Explosion killed one person and wounded ten, plane was able to land. Here's the wikipedia link

20. Yes but if multiple people board with the same material
and then assemble it mid-flight. That would be a different story altogether. I've actually wondered why no one has tried to smuggle individually innocuous components onto a plane and assemble them mid-flight. It seems entirely possible. EG what chemical are those bomb wipe things in airports testing for? Wouldn't it be possible for several people to simply carry the non-testable precursors onboard?

25. Small amount of explosives would create a tear in the skin of the plane
Aerodynamic forces would then tear it apart.
