I guess as the euphoria and excitement of Ned Lamont's win begins to wear off, I've softened a bit in my feelings toward Joe.
Joe, you're a good and decent man, but you know what?...
so is Ned Lamont. He's a good and decent man too. The people that voted for Ned are also good and decent people, as are your supporters. Ned Lamont and his supporters do not deserve to be treated the way that you are treating them. I can understand you being hurt and angry. You may feel that losing your primary is not fair, but as our parents have famously told us; "life is not always fair".
You know Joe, maybe after 18 years in the Senate, you forgot that you
do not own that Senate seat. That Senate seat belongs, first and foremost, to the American people, and specifically, to the people of Connecticut. The Democrats in Connecticut have spoke Joe, and they've decided to go in a different direction. Running as an independent may seem like a good thing to do at this point. You may think you're doing it for the people that supported you. You may even think that this is what's best for the country.
If that's the case, your thinking is flawed. You should be thinking about what is best for the
people of Connecticut! Is it really best for the people of Connecticut to have their votes split three ways, so they can be represented by someone who may,
may garner 34% of the vote? Is it really best for the people of Connecticut to have a Senator with no committee positions, no caucus, no party, and no power? Think Joe! I know your hurting now, but think for once what is best for America and the people of Connecticut. You were rejected Joe, and I know it hurts, but do the right thing! Get behind Ned Lamont and put the people of Connecticut ahead of yourself.
Joe, in every election, there are winners and there are losers. You've had a good run for 18 years. You're simply facing what millions of Americans face everyday. You've lost your job! Unlike most American's, you'll have a good pension, you've made enough money to squirrel away a nice nest egg, and you have connections that will land you a 7 figure salary.
It's not like you're that National Guardsmen I read about today. You know the one who returned from Iraq, only to find his adjustable rate mortgage had doubled, his civilian job had been filled by another, he lost his combat pay, his minimum credit card payments had doubled (thanks to the Republican controlled Senate), and his house was overvalued. He's working two jobs Joe, including one at a horse stable, and he still is going to lose his house.
Speaking of losers Joe. It's been a long time, but you remember Lowell Weiker, don't you? He's the one you defeated in 1988. Here's little refresher for you.
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2003/12/07/a_moral_drive_for_the_presidency/"He attacked Weicker, a moderate Republican, from the right, criticizing his failure to support Reagan's military actions in Libya and Grenada. Lieberman advocated a moment of silence in school, whereas Weicker stood against school prayer. But the incumbent held on in the polls, until Kerry again helped out. He sent Lieberman an extensive opposition research memo revealing that Weicker had missed several Senate votes because he was off speaking to lobbying groups. Using this research, the Lieberman campaign crafted attack television spots depicting Weicker as a sleeping bear, playing off his girth. The ads are still infamous in Connecticut political circles.
Lieberman won the closest Connecticut election in almost two decades -- by less than 1 percent of the vote." - BTW, Did you offer a "do-over" to Lowell since it was only 1%?
Some on your side like to point out that you're a decent and honorable man. Civil in politics, you seek bipartisan cooperation in the Senate. That's good Joe, but let me ask you:
- Was it bipartisan when Dick Cheney told your fellow Senate Democrat to "go fuck himself".
- Was it bipartisan when Bill Frist broke a 150 year old "gentleman's agreement" to not campaign against the Senate Minority Leader?
- Was it bipartisan when the Republicans attached an Estate Tax Cut that would benefit 8,000 Americans to a Minimum Wage Increase that would have benefited 11,000,000 Americans?
- Was it bipartisan when Republican (with your help) passed the recent Bankruptcy Law that shielded the mega-wealthy and targeted the middle class and poor?
- Was it bipartisan when your "good friend" Sean Hannity pumped and pushed bogus rape and murder charges against Bill Clinton?
- Was it bipartisan when your "good friend" Sean Hannity gave voice and credibility to a bunch of Nixon era wing-nuts and Freepers to smear, slander, and besmirch the military record and patriotism of John Kerry?
- Was it bipartisan when your "good friend" Sean Hannity compared Democrats and liberals to terrorist, and said they wanted more American troops killed in Iraq?
- Was it bipartisan when your "good friend" Sean Hannity hosted Ann Coulter, who called for the deportation and or execution of all liberals?
- Was it bipartisan when your "good friend" Sean Hannity hosted Ann Coulter, who called for the summary execution of NY Times editors, and suggested that Timothy McVeigh should have blown up the NY Times building instead?
Joe, as I write this, the anger I feel is bubbling to the surface again. Do what is right Joe. You lost your job. So what! Join the millions of other Americans that have lost their's. If you care at all about the people of Connecticut and this country, you'll look for other work. I'm sure you can find something. After all, you are a decent and good man, aren't you?
