Russ Feingold has been travelling across Wisconsin to build up local democratic parties. This article from a local paper touches on what looks to be a controversial subject in the 2008 Democratic primaries--Feingold's religion. Now, unless a Democratic nominee is a Satan worshiper who spends countless hours a day praying for hell on earth, I couldn't give a shit what a nominee's religion is. Christian, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, it doesn't matter--and it shouldn't matter--as long as they can do the job.

Here's a snapshot of what Wisconsinites think of the religion question:

Eagle County Commissioner Peter Runyon, a Democrat, said he was "impressed with his straight-talking style," he said. But while most Mountain Democrats said they would support Feingold if he runs in the 2008 presidential election, Runyon said he was hesitant.

"He is Jewish, and I can see tremendous problems in the Arab world," Runyon said. "It's unfortunate. It shouldn't matter, but in the Middle East it's huge ... Hate against Jews is enormous (in the Middle East)."

Others don't consider Feingold's religion a factor.

"Feingold, being a Jew, is behaving more Christian than the one who says he is a Christian," said John Gorman of Glenwood Springs, referring to President Bush.

1. It shouldn't matter
Feingold does a great job with being a leader and he does care about people. Look at what he did with the "Patriot Act" deal recently! He was amazing. I remember my town had a mayoral race back in April and rumors got around one canidate was an athiest and people were up in arms. Of course it turned out she was Christian and was saying someone from the now mayor's campaign was doing the rumors. Whatever happened to church mattering to those who attend? Even though I personally am a Christian it's really naive of me to think everyone else in the country wants the government done the same way as I do even if I am a liberal. And as one person quoted said it shouldn't matter if the person can do the job and Feingold does it well.

2. Ya know, if we Democrats stop worrying what everyone else thinks
we'd be a hell of a lot better off.

I don't give a fuck what somebody in the middle east thinks about our president. bush is supposedly a christian and he doesn't seem to have many fans in the mideast these days (Saudi royal family aside). I'm pretty sure the middle east won't think any less of a President Feingold than they do a President* bush.

4. I wouldn't be surprised in the least bit, though...
if Rove tried to push this talking point.

How great would that be, though...Feingold brings peace to the Arab world! If anyone could do it, he could.

12. Yes
And why should that matter? Feingold would represent the country. Not just Jews.

5. Don't the fundies kind of like Israel?
The fundies are Old Testement based, anyways. It would be funny if someone could convince the fundies that having a "member of the tribe of Israel" as President is some sort of requirement for the rapture, and thereby creating a huge wedge in the Republican base. :)

8. Well, no, Jews aren't saved and they use up resources. They "support"
Israel in lieu of the ever growing religious threat of Islam. Most US citizens mistakenly view Israel as some kind of extension of the US government.

At least people like Falwell, Robertson etc. They could care less about Israel. Check out the film "The War Party" at http://informationclearinghouse.info/ It shows why they're pro-Israel and so does the PNAC documents if you haven't seen them yet (you can at pnac.info and newamericanceutry.org).

6. When Feingold runs in 2008
he will be running for President of the United States, not President of the Middle East.

I don't think bin Laden hates the United States because Jewish people live here, he hates us and attacks us for our lifestyle and our prescence in the Middle East. Electing a Jewish President would do nothing to change that. Electing a man with principles, an understanding that Iraq is a distraction to fighting terrorism, and the know-how to combat terrorism without undermining the privacy and civil liberties of law-abiding Americans would keep all Americans safer.

9. Love your signature
"This is our country...Not your church,"

I would love to put that on a bumpersticker, but my mother-in-law would rip my bumper right off my car when she saw it.
