Now we've finally got an Armageddon date...
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 04:33 PM by cynatnite
A top expert on the Mideast says it is possible Iran could pick Aug. 22, the anniversary of one of Islam's holiest events, for a cataclysm Shiite Muslims believe will forever resolve the battle between "good" and "evil."

Princeton's Bernard Lewis has written an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal advising that the rest of the world would be wise to bear in mind that for those who believe the end of the world is imminent and good, there is no deterrent even to nuclear warfare.

As WorldNetDaily has reported, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has urged his people to prepare for the coming of an Islamic "messiah," raising concerns a nuclear-armed Islamic Republic could trigger the kind of global conflagration he envisions will set the stage for the end of the world.

He's also said, in a WND report, that Islam and its followers must prepare to rule the world, because it is a "universal ideology that leads the world to justice."

6. Do you think white shoes would be too presumptious to enter
the Kingdom of Heaven? Or should I dress with modest brown shoes?
I can't believe these decisions that need to be made.
I am just GLAD that I have time to get my eyebrows waxed before the rapture.
I would HATE to go through eternity with bushy eyebrows.

I trust that Bernard Lewis doesn't think that statement only applies to Muslims.

7. Gee - what a coincidence!
US-Canadian exercise "Vigilant Guardian" Aug 17-26 (same exercise run on 9-11)

(FFN Editors note: These same "Vigilant Guardian" drills were being run on 9-11, which depleted the NORAD air defenses. More coming soon on these drills in August...)

Then when you consider that Bush Is Rumored To Be Seeking A “Persian Gulf Incident, I’ve got to wonder if the WSJ/WND is putting out prepatory propaganda to prime the public pump.

August 22, eh?

33. So, with these "drills" being held in Ontario
Would that leave Toronto wide open for a terraist attack?

For a long time, I have thought that the next "terra" event would involve a Canadian city close to the US border. Toronto and Vancouver seemed the obvious choices, but Windsor Ontario might work even better, given the proximity to the large Arab American community in the Dearborn/Detroit area. Convenient scapegoats for the Bush bastards and all they have to do is cross a bridge, or be accused of launching something accross the river.

23. They don't care if they're destroyed. That's the point of the article!
As for intent, a passage from the Ayatollah Khomeini, quoted in an 11th-grade Iranian schoolbook, reveals priorities: "I am decisively announcing to the whole world that if the world-devourers (i.e., the infidel powers) wish to stand against our religion, we will stand against their whole world and will not cease until the annihilation of all them. Either we all become free, or we will go to the greater freedom which is martyrdom."

The article is a warning about how the policy of MAD (mutually assured destruction), which seems to have worked during the cold war, won't work against a country like Iran. In fact, it's a sort of inducement for destruction.

35. Bingo!
For those who believe, the devotion is real. Tears stream down the cheeks of 2,000 men ripe for the return of the Mahdi, the 12th Imam they expect will soon emerge to bring justice and peace to a corrupt world.

-snip-

As at a Christian revivalist meeting that promises healing and redemption, many weep as they pray for the Shiite Muslim version of the second coming of the Messiah.

-snip-

"Bush said: 'God said to me, attack Afghanistan and attack Iraq.' The mentality of Mr. Bush and (President) Ahmadinejad is the same here - both think God tells them what to do," says Mr. Mohebian, noting that end-of-time beliefs have similar roots in Christian and Muslim theology.

"If you think these are the last days of the world, and Jesus will come , this idea will change all your relations," says Mohebian. "If I think the Mahdi will come in two, three, or four years, why should I be soft? Now is the time to stand strong, to be hard." That mind-set also hearkens back to the missionary ambition of the newly forged Islamic Republic. "What Ahmadinejad believes is that we have to create a model state based on ... Islamic democracy - to be given to the world," says Hamidreza Taraghi, head of the conservative Islamic Coalition Society. "The ... government accepts this role for themselves."

Any possibility of détente with the US may also be in jeopardy, if the US-Iran conflict is cast in Mahdaviat terms. That view holds that the US - with quasireligious declarations of transforming the Middle East with democracy and justice, deploying military forces across the region, and developing a new generation of nuclear weapons - is arrogantly trying to assume the role of Mahdi.

40. Unfortunately (more or less)
there are likely to be survivors of all the fundies' various Armageddons -- I imagine large parts of the non-insane world will decline the invitation to participate, and the geographies/nations involved pretty much preclude all-out nuclear war.

The most likely result of any Armageddon enactment would be Israel, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and perhaps a few other Middle Eastern countries in a state of utter radioactive ruin, nations immediately downwind of them in crisis, with a good part of the citizenry sick or dead from fallout they're too poor and/or uneducated and/or unwilling to be able to shelter from effectively, possibly a few Western cities destroyed, a sixth to perhaps as much as half of America's military dead, wounded, or dying, America an international pariah with very little oil, and the triumphant rise of China as the world's most powerful nation.

Yup, sounds like a real (food) riot for us survivors.

I suppose we could look at the bright side. At least there will be a significant decline in fundamentalism around the globe. Where can Jesus return to if Jerusalem is a glow-in-the-dark crater?
