Seriously though, I don't think so technically - it depends on how far we are willing to go to say that character flaws are mental illnesses.

That said, it certainly can make it hard to deal with reality as it is.

3. I believe it's more of a personality disorder
which, IMHO, is worse than mental illness. Narcissistic and Sociopathic personality types are usually highly intelligent, manipulative and cunning. They lack empathy and enjoy the suffering of others. When cornered, they resist any form of treatment, enjoying the advantage their lack of conscience allows them to have over others.

5. Yes, check the DSM
(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)

There are lots of egomaniacs in jail, and in Congress.

9. for some folks
the worst example ever is bush. and what even qualifies his big ego? lifelong failure probably.

when ego kills thousands of people as it is now, its a sickness and we are all sucked into the sickness.

we all have egos or we'd never do anything, but if one has a giant inflated ego, it usually means they feel little inside.

10. A wise person once told me that the ego and the soul
are not separate. If you are capable of doing great things, you need largess of soul and ego, though things can go awry.

12. That's interesting...
I've always thought that anyone that ran for prez either had an enormous ego, you'd have to, wouldn't you?

13. For Bush, I don't know if his ego is all that big
I think it is just focused on itself. I don't think he has a great soul, or is capable of great things. I am thinking of other people, like Einstein, or Socrates. They had big egos along with their spirit or soul.

14. Yes. Narcissism is horrid. But they actually have no self-esteem. Why
they have to constantly exploit and "win" over others.. and destroy and take.. and abuse & stalk... and attack people who were just minding their own business for some perceived slight.

Because they are actually nothing. They don't have a human - adult ego... theirs is empty without constant affirmation of how great and special they truly are.

It is disgusting.
