It is a fine line and you must walk it intently.
Idealism, following your heart are central to our beliefs. So why should you ever vote for someone who isn't the best candidate for you?
Well in Florida 2000, I had that choice. Look what has happened... It was lost by some 500 votes.
What I realized is that idealism is what we strive for, but reality must be accounted for. The choices we make have a direct effect on the world around us. I realized that by voting for Nader or not voting (i did the latter - was out of town) that there would be consequences.
Now this is the way I look at today. Your vote has consequences in reality. Idealism should drive us, but we must recognize it's limitations.
That is why I vote Democratic today. Because I know that in reality, that will do the most to change the world for the better. If I voted otherwise, I would either waste my vote or contribute to our problems.
