Will Any Prominent Dems Support Lieberman
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 06:09 AM by cali
in his run as an Independent? Here's where the rubber really meets the road. I know that my Senator (Leahy) and soon to be Senator-Elect, Sanders, will support Lamont. Same goes for the dem here who's running for Sander's seat, Peter Welch. Leahy announced some time ago he'd support Lamont if he won. I imagine Dean and the DNC (after all it is the DNC) will be solidly behind Lamont. What about Reid and others? Will they also back Lamont?

1. Zell Miller?
He'll get support from some "Democratic" or "liberal" pundits (Cokie Roberts, Mickey Kaus).

2. Tom Carper

Has apparently already gotten on board. I expect to see some other Republican enablers get behind Lieberman, too.

3. No, not at least anyone who is currently
in office. The Party comes first and even if they have to hold their nose to do it they will support Lamont. The priority is to get more Dems elected, not to support friends that bolt the party and weaken the party.

6. I hope you're right
but as one poster has noted, Carper is going to back joe. It would be pretty appalling if a number of dems joined him.

4. The next few days promise to tell us quite a bit about our party
don't they? It will be very interesting to see what the players chose to do in terms of throwing their support to Joe. It seems inimical to the system to support a person who is not the Party nominee, but apparently that is not the way all perceive it-right Senator Carper?

5. ANY Democrat that does not support the nominee deserves to lose THEIR seat
We don't want to march in lockstep like Republicans do - but when it's over, it's over. Back the nominee and nobody else at their own peril.

7. Absolutely agree
The primary is over. There's a dem candidate. Dems should support him. I feel kind of hypocritical writing this because I support an independent for Senator. But then so does the party.

8. If you are talking about Bernie Sanders
we had this discussion here yesterday and Bernie is running both as an I and a D and will likely win the D primary thus ending any issue over our support of him. Nothing to worry about there.

9. Nah, I'm not gonna worry about it
I've supported Bernie and worked on all his campaigns, and the DNC supports him too. I'm not even sure who's running as a dem; I think it's perennial politician Larry Drown. But, Bernie is NOT running as a dem. He's been very clear about that.

10. He is on the ballot in the Democratic primary
And he has the official support of the Vermont Democratic Party. As per a discussion had here yesterday my understanding is that unless a miracle happens Bernie will have two lines on the ballot.

11. Yes, but
Bernie has specifically stated that he is not running as dem but sticking to his independent label. Really, it's a matter of semantics, I suppose, but he's been clear about that distinction.
