Anyone here ever had "Havana Club" Rum? Bacardi is about to start...
...selling a Made in America version, they bought the rights and recipe from the Cuban family who created it in Cuba before the revolution. It was Bacardi's #1 competitor in Cuba before the Cuban Revolution.

It's still made in Cuba, but they say it's not very good. Bacardi says their version will be better.

So anyone had it? Post 1960 version or if you've had both pre and post 1960 version, is the new version much different?

Rumble Brewing over 'Real' Cuban Rum

by Tom Gjelten

All Things Considered, August 8, 2006 · The Bacardi company
will soon start selling a new version of Havana Club Rum,
competing with a rum made in Cuba under the same name.
The fight over which is the genuine Havana Club foreshadows
battles likely to come in Cuba in the post-Castro era.

1. I had Havana Club when I was in Havana
It was very good rum, much better than Bacardi.

3. Was that recently or pre-1960?
I kind of figured this was more trouble making by the Cuban Exile community. It sets up a trade dispute for after Fidel passes IF the government changes to the liking of the Cuban-Americans and the U.S. Government.

2. Much better than Bacardi, IMO
A much "richer" taste and aroma.

9. About $27 for a 26-ouncer
A little more expensive than Bacardi. But worth it. They even have two kinds - a 40% alcohol and a 45%.

6. I prefer Myers's rum
Somehow I prefer the darker and sweeter Jamaican rum. It is a matter of personal taste. I wouldn't buy Bacardi because the family is GOP.

8. I've heard people say that before, some people love...
...Captain Morgan and Malibu too, believe it or not.

I've never tried drinking Rum straight up or on the rocks, just mixed.

I'm more into Tequila (1800!) and Vodka when I go out.

10. Especially for baking
I love the taste of Capt. Morgan in my goodies. I like it so much, in fact, that I've come to prefer the taste of it in general too.

7. I drink the 7 Year Old
Havana Club Rum everytime I am in Canada and I have to say that it's delicious. By itself or mixed with just about anything, it's far and away superior to Bacardi. Last month, I paid about 25.99 Canadian Dollars for a 750ml bottle, if memory serves.

I have to admit, I do drink Bacardi Gold here in the States because I simply haven't found anything as good in the U.S. market for the price. It chagrins me because the Bacardi propieters are notoriously anti-union and pro-Republican. Makes one have to swallow hard...
